Aye, I wouldn't say it was common, but it isn't something that is very rare. I kinda looked into it when I found out it happened to me, it was repsonible for alot of child birth mortailities in those "good old days" our great grandparent like to remind us of.   The biggest problem is that it can actually get really tight and knot, and that is where the difficult is in cutting it.  The mothers about 100 years ago...
