I don't know about Ford versions in particular, but there are at least two gear sets in T18s. The desirable one has a 6.32:1 first gear. The other is four something. It's easy enough to tell while it's on the bench - put it in first and turn the input shaft while counting turns of the output. __________________ EVERYTHING's easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it. TSL vs XZL
Published (2009-11-03 07:52:00)
that makes sense. Do you know if one is superior to the other on the trails. i feel like the tsl would be better for extream offroading, where as the xzl's are less aggresive, but increased strength for heavy equipment or trucks. Is this correct? thanks

tying a roll bar to the frame
Published (2009-11-08 19:32:00)
Anyone remember that Jeep roll in Colorado a few years ago that killed the driver? The Jeep only flopped down a few hundred feet down the side of a mountain when the driver got off camber while climbing up a small rise. The roll was a disaster; the body separated from the frame and the frame and running gear continued further down the mountain. The driver's dog jumped free and lived. Had the driver installed a full roll cage, attached to...

Mufflers

I ended up swapping in an exhaust setup (manifolds back 2into-1) that had a Midas "flowmaster clone" (Ravin?) that sounds VERY quiet until romped, then has nice throaty report... A big change from the loud (& very juvenile sounding) dual glasspacks I used to run!

tying a roll bar to the frame
Published (2009-11-08 18:41:00)
I look at it this way. If your cage is attached only to the tub then you are forcing the tub to absorb all the energy generated during any type of roll as transmitted through the cage, whether major or minor. If you attach to the frame then the frame is absorbing that energy. A much more robust foundation in my opinion. Sturdiness of sheetmetal, body mounts, etc becomes a moot point. I personally see no argument that justifies mounting to the...

That's commonly referred to as a "bell-joint" and yes, they are generally greased... not packed completely full, but enough to keep the squares inside the bell lubed.

It has been talked about....though it has been awhile...
Two basic schools of thought....to tie to the frame or not to tie to the frame...
Some feel that a frame tie in is the strongest....
I personally think it is better NOT to be tied into the frame.... reason being, if a roll over is that bad....I would rather the tub seperate from the frame and go it's seperate way. In ...

If you narrow both sides of the Waggy axle you don't need to outboard the springs. I narrowed mine so that the eye-to-eye distance was the same as the narrow-track D30. With the larger D44 hubs the track is a couple inches wider than stock. That let everything go back just like stock. Most people probably don't even notice that it's a 44.

Well, you asked two questions here that could be several pages of posts in themselves.
On the transmission front:
A wide ratio CJ T-18 is the ideal swap as it will bolt in and have the correct adapters. However, these are not real common and are highly sot after so they tend to be relatively expensive. There are other transmissions that will get you lower gears but will require...

Here's what's in the '78 FSM. The door handle was the same as your '80. This is cryptic. I hope it helps. I have paddle-handle doors, and have never messed with the locks. doorlocka.jpg

Complete tube fenders are coming off a '99 TJ Wrangler next week. Painted dark green, excellent condition. Located in southern Indiana, will be very expensive to ship. PM me or call Austin at 812-384-5440. $200 pick up price.

Depending on budget, but my first choice would be to go with a YJ (87-95) set up. The system is probably a bit more efficient overall and can be found used. However, the brake lines for the YJ attach to the master on the inside side (engine side) rather than the outside side. You should be able to bend your CJ lines around to make it work. Also, a CJ booster will not bolt up to a YJ master ...

Depends on Georgia law. Last time I checked in Illinois the vehicle didn't need much more than brakes on at least two wheels, headlights, brake light and tail light - just one if the vehicle was built that way. In the early '60s the local gendarmes were writing vehicle defect tickets to guys who had removed the front bumper - better quarter mile times with the weight off the front. After a ...

Other then the obvious tread differences, the Michelin's are a much heavier tire. More for heavy trucks say 2 ton plus, then Jeeps.
The Michelin tires are Load range G, H, J which are 14, 16, and 18 ply rating respectively. Link They will not flex much at all I would think they would hold up the Jeep with no air in them at all.
Interco tires are much more inline with the weight ...

I have some pictures but they will not likely be of help. My 80 had a completely none stock belt setup and I made my own mount. There are a few web sites with writeups that show the stock mounts sadly all my bookmarks for them have gone bad.
They changed the belt routing several times over the years so the year of engine is important. Also what compressor do you plan to run?

Dana 30 axles are weak units by anybody's standards.
Small ring and pinion added to small axle joints and flimsy steering linkage make for an interesting time trying to make the thing work in 'Serious' application.
If all you do is mild trails, and have lockouts,
Then a 30 with a $200 'Lunch Box' locker will probably do you OK.
If you intend to use a mildly built V-8, then you might ...
