That is tough going, but I personally look into trying with another
Ac Adapter and/or battery first before going into the next step - and that is replacing the power jack.

You should be able to negotiate with Toshiba for replacement disks, worthy of a small investment and not taking the chance of downloading some bad stuffs.

Last thing I would try is replacing the
CMOS battery. A long shot. And after that I would write the comp off.
