PCG-TR3A RAM Upgrade Question

This model calls for 1GB max, so you can install another module of 512MB. A 2nd slot should be made available at the bottom of the notebook. cheers ...

Honestly shut down and burning smell? Nothing happens when powered on? Sorry if bad news is not helpful but? Resetting the CMOS is pointless. If you are lucky and the burn is just from the power connection on MoBo look at it. But the bad news is it sounds like MoBo is fried. Furthermore MoBo's are not hand soldered so hand soldered repairs are not easy or possible. MoBo's are swappable. I have done hand soldering on MoBo's but...

Vaio PCG-FRV26 no power

If I had a functioning battery perhaps I would have tested it - but with no power it won't charge the battery I have, & buying a new battery to test it at this stage seems stupid. No LED's, no power & no lights like I said. No offense but above post not very helpful - I've read several places that re-setting RTC/CMOS bat did help people - I just want to try to re-set it as a possible option because right now I...

PCG-TR3A RAM Upgrade Question
Published (2009-11-10 09:53:00)
In order to upgrage from 512 MB to 1 GB RAM, would I simply add another 512 MB module (is there an extra slot for it), or are there a 1 GB modules available? Maybe dumb question - I understand on PCs you woulod just add another mem chip) but I'm unfamiliar with the insides of many laptops and considering their space saving design. I've been directed to the online manuals that some have posted, but there doesn't seem to be any...

First - Flaming someone (and a long term member here) who was merely trying to help is not going to get you much response. I agree there not much point looking at the CMOS battery, it has no effect on booting up, it merely retains the BIOS settings. The issue is most likely with the DC power circuit. and smell usually means a componant has fried. It is possible it was a thermal fuse that popped, so if you can find that on your schematic try...

Sony Vaio Laptop and HDTV
Published (2009-11-09 14:28:00)
Hey, everyone! I have received a Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E laptop from my brother. The history of this laptop is that it had a mechanically dead hard drive in it. So, I have put in a new hard drive and a few months later, I have purchased and installed Windows 7 Pro on it (so far, it's been the best Windows I have seen, and it has been running rather smooth). Anyways, I have recently moved out from my dad's place and I am finally back...

Vaio Recovery Problem
Published (2009-11-10 02:05:00)
i have a VAIO VGN-FZ160E. when i tried to recover my laptop to its factory settings by using the recovery drive, i changed the active partition of my hard drive from "C" to "Recovery partition" by means of "Acronis Disc Director" software and then reboot it (because this method was helpful in recovering my old Dell laptop). after that an error appears : "can't find ntldr ,...

Have you tested with just a functioning battery? Read it nowhere in your post.
With a good input power source you should at least see the LED, and swapping out the CMOS battery would not help much. Could be under your motherboard.

You can try to perform a repair from an installation disk (ignoring the message of not-seeing the drive/partition, or download EASUS and use its utility of fix boot record. Hopefully it can get your drive back to being accessible. If not, another drive is what you need.

If you can't find by trial and error in less than five minutes I have no comment? sfsb? Come on! Not rocket science. I did not post to find mine. Maybe yours does not have?
I just tried PLL's when one reported clocks (wrong) knew in the correct family. Went from there.

A free service guide for this model is hard to find. You might want to invest a few $ and order it online. Or just take one of the notebook and start dismantling. We have a sticky here in the section that you can browse and see if you can get the service guide from a model close to yours.

I would not write off the machine so quickly. How about taking it apart and clean it up a bit? Applying new thermal paste as well?
Swap out the ram? Use one stick and see, if you have 2?
Take a look at the sticky here in the section and see if you can find the service guide to your model.

On ebay.com I saw this # 250419569062 that corresponds to both the part number and your model number. I also see no difference with the part that I submitted in a link earlier to you.
( ouch - you dug up a no-response post from Michelle ... @ Michelle: I claim ignorance of the time frame, and not the ignoring part )

Is Sony Application Recovery needed??
I have had my Vaio laptop (FE-31M) for some time and over the years it has become sluggish, i used the system recovery disk to format my drive. It now ask's to use the applications disk to install all the apps that were originally on the laptop but i never use them, they are just a waste to me ...
