Normally when you plug in the headset to the audio port, this would "mute" the on-board sound. Am I missing something?
You can also try going into playback devices and disable the audio from the
on-board device if you wish.

are you sure it is not just a panel on the bottom? that perticular notebook looks to be big enough to use a standard sized drive. the ones that use the 1.8 inch drives are ususally integrated into the machine, but the ones that use the standard 2.5 inch drives usually have them set up for pretty
easy access

Have you checked and see if there are W7 drivers for your model direct from eSupport? I have not yet my SZ71 to W7, currently working on the lady's CS21.
How did you perform the upgrade? Any error codes and messages?

Have you tested with just a functioning battery? Read it nowhere in your post.
With a good input
power source you should at least see the LED, and swapping out the CMOS battery would not help much. Could be under your motherboard.

Hey masterarcher,
Your problem does not seem to be local to your computer, which could be to our advantage. I searched your product name and added windows 7 on google and found other people with the same problem you describe. I haven't seen a reliable solution in my first attempts at searching. Seems like Sony needs to seriously release a new driver for your system.
I know that Microsoft...

I am afraid that you would be stuck with Sony Support to fix this issue. Sorry if there is not much better input than this.

This model calls for 1GB max, so you can install another module of 512MB. A 2nd slot should be
made available at the bottom of the notebook.

You can try to perform a repair from an installation disk (ignoring the message of not-seeing the drive/partition, or download EASUS and use its utility of fix
boot record. Hopefully it can get your drive back to being accessible. If not, another drive is what you need.
