Yes in theory you should be able to connect to Router 2 (Access Point) wirelessly but that Access Point should be using/pointing to Router 1 (Main Router) as the Default Gateway. So it will get all it's routing info. from Router 1.
I used dd-wrt (Repeater Bridge Mode) to set this up at my place as my Linksys Routers didn't support the Access Point feature
out-the-box.

Theoretically, an Internal Wifi is faster, since USB's max rate is theoretically slower than
Wireless N's max rate.
In practice, both will be limited by packet overhead, so the speed difference is often unnoticable.
You can definitely buy an external wifi card and use it with your laptop. I have the same configuration as I use powered antennae to hunt down pesky unauthorized wifi spots ...

There are, as you noted, bad reviews about all of them. I think you've
got it covered with what you have seen so far. I'd probably opt for the D-Link myself as its ratio of positive to negative reviews seems a bit better.
Or, wait until the technology matures.

Make sure you have access with the firewall. FW can and will block access
if not properly set.
