most soup kitchens are JAMMED on Thanksgiving because most people try and volunteer on that one day.  I've been turned away from places in the city.  It might be different in NJ though.  Just go to the place you want to volunteer and ask. Keep in mind that the new volunteers often get the shittiest duties- garbage, cleaning, etc.  Not everyone gets to cook and serve.
