It is better to focus your points on a few selected styles. Note, however, that points for weapon styles of the same "class" the upgrades carry over - for example, if you have Fortune's Favorite sword, and you buy the Dragon Sword. As far as I can tell, pads just aren't 100% reliable for JE (leading to situations you described).

as a fellow gamer the only quick fix I can think of: lower the game resolution. If you play it in lower res the font is automatically 'bigger'. Otherwise wait for others to post a better solution.
