DHCP is just as useful on a home network. Most people want to be able to hook up any random machine and not have to worry about having to manually configure the network. Same with small businesses.

Most important benefit: if you're running a domain, then running DHCP from your server means it can be integrated in to Active Directory. Adds security and flexibility. Contrary to what you may have read, Windows Media Player is offered as an OPTIONAL feature in Server 2k8. Since it's not installed by default, go to Server Manager -> Features -> Desktop Experience to turn it on.
