It should work how you have set it up. Try another optical cable if possible.

In all honesty I hate the wired one (uncomfortable and feels cheap) just as much as the wireless one (the in ear speaker on three units of mine all sucked and they aren't all that comfy either). Maybe I expect too much from the device but the sound quality was awful. Next time I consider buying one it'll probably be a third party solution to see if they suit me any more....
