fly tying Kennesaw/Acworth area
Published (2009-12-07 07:19:00)
Is anyone interested in getting a ffree small fly tying class together on Fri nite or Sunday afternoons in Kennesaw/Acworth area? Maybe Wille would let us meet in shop. I know there's fly tying on Thursday nights, but I can't make that, I have Bible study that night. Or, is someone willing to help teach me more fly tying and I'll buy their lunch or something. I've been following recipes in books and watching YouTube videos,...

Colonel, Welcome to the obsession! I suggest you contact one of our sponsor fly shops (Unicoi Outfitters / The Fish Hawk) and let them hook you up with a quality starter kit. I know for a fact that UO has a very good one for under $200 and I would think that the Fish Hawk offers something similar as well. Stay away from those cheapo starter kits you see on Flea-Bay and sporting good stores, you will be very disappointed in the quality. PS:...

Steve Hudson and TOM have pretty much covered this subject. It's half-time of a couple of pretty interesting games.

Stay away from Wapsi, and Orvis as those kits have too much stuff you will never use. Get the Unicoi as it is geared to this area.

Many beads are sold by millimeter size (mm). Just remember, one mm = .03937". For example, 3 mm x .03937" = .11811" diameter. What's close to.118" in 8ths of an inch? 1/8" = 1 divided by 8= .125", so a 3mm bead is just slightly under 1/8 of an inch (.007 " under 1/8th"). A 2.5 mm = 2.5 x .03937= .098425" or .098". 3/32" = .09375 --so, a 2.5...

Thank you all for the advice, that is exactly the type of info. I was looking for. And Leach... "Why not sign up for some classes instead? If you're in a position to stop by the Fish Hawk after work, take a look at this: http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/foru...ad.php?t=76497 If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. Here's a good chance to skip a few painful steps on the learning curve." That is some good...

I just bought two whole rabbit skins for 50% off 3.99 each at Hobby Lobby. Many, many zonker strips and cross cut strips can be made. They have white, black and natural (brown/gray.) White can be died, and all can be cut with two straight razor blades with a screw through the holes and washers separating to the desired thickness.
Craft cord in silver, gold and mylar can also be used for ...

I have one also and like it a lot but if you have hands on the small side you might not get it's full potential. If he had 4" it would be better for most folks.

Deb,
Another place to consider having a tying lesson session is the local public library. I know that the North Cobb Branch located over at Mars Hill Rd and Stilesboro Road has nice rooms you can reserve for stuff like this. It is totally free to use these rooms, but you do have to reserve them in advance.
PS: although I do not consider myself to be an expert tyer, I would be happy ...

Deb,
I am sure that some of the tiers that are a lot more experienced then me will chime in but you do not want to bend/unbend the hooks too much. Each time you do this it will weaken the hook and have more of a chance of it breaking when fighting a fish. Now if you needed to unbend it just a little to get them on then I think that would be OK. Sounds like it is more likely that you need to ...

To help you a little, I know Mike the owner. He has a large booth at the Somerset show in January every year and attends other small shows throughout the year locally. I have never ordered anything from him, but have purchased from him and I know he is a straight up guy, with good quality materials.
