Different modes for fuel pump on Renix: When the key is in the ON position, power is supplied to the fuel pump by the B latch relay bypassing the ballast resistor for 3 seconds. When the key is in the START position, power is supplied to the fuel pump by the starter relay bypassing the ballast resistor. When the key is in the ON position, and the engine is running, power is supplied to the fuel pump by the fuel pump relay through the ballast...

^X2, transfer your old speedo assembly into the new case if it isn't trashed. The old cable style setup was last used in 90 I believe, after that various electronic sensors have been used.

Engine bolt pattern is the same so the late model trans will bolt up. As for the converter, I don't know and I'd be surprised if anybody did for sure. Best thing to do with that is call the dealer and see if they're the same part number.

Oil in air filter

The companion line to the airbox/valve cover one is the valve cover/intake manifold line. If the one to the intake manifold is plugged, the blowby goes to the air filter. It is designed to draw from the air cleaner through the valve cover to the intake manifold.

If you just have the OE switch, and not the wiring kit, and your XJ didn't have fogs stock, you could wire up a factory switch like this. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/f...pgrade-653022/

97 5-speed XJ Fast Idle when warm
Published (2009-11-22 22:57:00)
Did you clean the TB where the IAC mounts. Carbon inside the pocket behind the IAC is the most common problem. I spray in there and use a small cleaning brush the finish off with a Qtip until it comes back clean. The idle should drop as it warms up. Loose bolts on the TB to the manifold or actual intake manifold bolts can also cause it. Check the Air Charge Sensor with an ohmmeter. I can't remember the numbers but you should be able to...

No, you don't have an EGR to worry about. But if you feel the need to clean something, I'd recommend cleaning your idle air control AND your throttle body. They get carboned up over time and miles. SEARCH for more information. Not a bad preventive measure for the 4.0...

I'd be willing to bet it's a grounding issue on your bulb socket. I'll put $1 down that the small metal tab that grounds the socket is rusted out.

where do you spray the starter fluid at, throttle body I'd imagine? After it starts, do you put the rubber snorkel back on and it runs fine? I'm trying to figure out why starter fluid would make it start and it runs fine so the injectors are getting fuel and proper timing from ECU. Maybe bypass the ballast resistor located by air cleaner.

I don't know your experience level, but a torque converter is not a clutch. Several times here I've seen guys try and stab the trans with the converter bolted to the engine- ain't gonna happen. Get that sucker in the bellhousing first. If it's in all the way, it'll actually have to come back forward just a bit to get to the flexplate when the motor/ trans are bolted together.

Ok, sounds like the batter( ies) are dead.
First step, disconnect and fully charge the batter(ies) for 8 hours (good) or 24 hours (best).
While the battery is disconnected clean BOTH ends of both cables. While you have the cables disconnected to clean the ends test the cables with an ohm meter--resistance should be near ZERO.
Ok, good time to also renew all of your ...

Both my books say fuel system too lean. Hence the awesome fuel mileage!
Maybe O2 sensor?
There are two on yours. Most likely the one closest to your engine.

My jeep: 97, 4.0 / AX-15 / 200,300 miles.
People find it hard to believe, but im getting way better gas mileage than what Jeep advertised it at, and better than most other stock XJ owners get.
I live in Virginia but still go back to my "home" in Connecticut very often, so I make the 550 mile drive up 95 in my cherokee. I put 18 gallons in it, and routinely get 25mpg on these ...

It is most likely a loose connection between the Jeep and gauge cluster.
Try this link -- http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=13 39049 -- it is for a Wrangler but your XJ is similar.
If a whack on the top of the dash "fixes" the problem, clean the plug connection.
You could also be having clock spring problems.

I would perform a couple of quick and dirty tests to verify what part of the starting equation you are missing, spark or fuel or both. Once you know that, the suspect list gets a whole lot shorter.
How did you determine there is no spark? Pull a plug, keep it attached to the wire, place the electrode near a good engine ground. Have a buddy crank the engine while you watch. You're looking for...

I've noticed this noise before, but I kind of ignored it because at the time it started...I was jobless. Now that I have income and a steady job, I want to figure this out.
It seems to be when it's cold out or damp out. I can get it up to normal operating temperature and the noise will go away, but if I shut it off and turn it right back on...the noise comes back. It literally goes " Tick tick ...

A while back I had crazy idle issues and issues with my blinkers in my 1988 MJ.
During my initial troubleshooting, I did a few things. After I replaced the bulb sockets and headlight switch, the blinkers returned to normal. After I replaced the ground wire on the TPS, the idle dropped down to almost normal.
Both issues have cropped up again. First, I would get the left blinker indicator...

Got the gas at the Mobil Oasis in Belvadere Il. It's been there a while but it's not a mom and pop.
I wondered about that e85 or even diesel? Wouldn't that 'cause the rig to smoke a lot? I'm pretty sure I grabbed the correct nozzle but to tell you the truth, I was returning from my nephew funeral and I wasn't in the best of mind.

Hey guys,
I know the engine build code is stamped on the pass side of the block, but is the actual VIN# on the engine anywhere?
Also, if the first # in the engine build code is a "6" (which means it was built in 1996) how do you know it wasn't built in 2006?
Does the year code actually say "06" instead of "6"?

I saw the braided cable to the firewall, and the regular one to the dipstick. But there is no cable running from the battery to the body, that is what is wierd for me.
