high maintenance?
Published (2009-11-23 13:25:00)
After having successfully and economically repaired my alternator over the weekend I am in a better humour than I was when I first submitted this thread. The Houston roads are very rough, so I can attribute the suspension and tire issues to that. I have to say the Subaru has never left me stranded, and I feel very safe driving it in a rainstorm. We don't get snow in Houston, so I can't vouch for its virtues in that area. I'll...

I'm with BIG-E....tranny and diff oil is so easy and cheap to replace, I'm going to do it yearly for good measure (which will be about 10k-12k miles for me). I'd use Subaru Extra-S....I just got my 20L pail delivered last week....should last me 5 years .

timing belt job well done?
Published (2009-11-22 12:10:00)
yeah, i can understand how the notches on the covers can be confusing w/ lining up the cam sprocket. well, since i knew i had to take off the crankshaft sprocket to replace the key, i decided to replace the timing belt (144k on the clock) since i was gonna be in there. my delima was the alignment of the crankshaft gear w/ reference to the cam sprockets. the two markings on the crankshaft gear was confusing, but it was easier than i originally...

The Pistons will hit TDC ( top dead center) every 360* of crank rotation.
What you are thinking of it when the valves open or close in relation to the crank.
The pistons (lets say cylinder #1) will hit TDC twice for every full rotation of a cam.
Sooo......get all the timing marks lined up, put on the belt, let the tensioner loose to keep it tight.
If you crank the crankshaft 360*, ...

random and sporadic point to electrical issues. Check ALL connections, clean up grounds.....
What's the history? What kind of maintenance has been done, anything recently? You can try unplugging random sensors while running and see if anything changes.

Im pretty sure most CAI are bad news on wrx and sti without a aftermarket pro tune. Your motor could be cutting timing or boost because you ran it to lean. Maybe remove CAI and get a leakdown test?

Head gasket issues. Check radiator for signs of oil, or low coolant/bubbles. Check and see that the transmission and rear diff oils had been changed. People like to forget spark plugs on Subarus, every Subaru I have owned has had plugs nearly worn down to the ceramic from not being changed.
If it leaks too much, shakes too much, grinds too much, whines too much, etc. then walk away......

The best Castrol 5-40 here in the states is only sold at Vw and Audi dealers. Its listed as Castrol TXT its made specially for newer TDi's. You can get Syntec 5-40 at your local parts store but the add pack isn't anything special. Ive used both for several years since working for Vw and have had good results.

Ive got the Costco/Harbor Freight jack too. Its real name is US general. I use it to lift the car up high enough to get the full sized 6 ton jack under the car. The US general jack is kinda crap, its super hard to pump up and the wheels on the jack dont really roll so its sorta scary. Im just gonna get some slope ramps and toss the US general in the trash.

I wouldn't run that weight oil in a subaru, especially modified STi. You're better of getting a 5w30/10w30 or even 10w40 if driven hard. Shell rotella 5w40 seems to be a favored oil here, along with 0w30 "german" castrol....If you had a newer honda, or a toyota for example, you could use that oil.

Jack/stands (I have 3 jacks and 6 jack stands, I just use whichever one is closest to me when I go to grab one), and a generic pan from Northern Tool/Walmart/Oreilly's/Autozone.

If you follow your owner's manual, you will see that you should inspect it every 30k miles.
I however drive hard and do the occasional auto-cross. With that said, I change the gear oil and rear differential oil every year.
Since you have a WRX you can use either regular or synthetic API GL-5 oil, 75w-90 weight, for limited slip applications.
