One of these beauties, I love the feel of the vibrato and it has probably one of the coolest guitar body shapes of all time. And this mother, I've always wanted a hollowbody and the p-90s are just icing on the cake.

1 - RGA body with natural maple binding. 2 - Mahogany, Quilted Maple Top. Trans red or blue. The finish would have an undercoat of black, sanded back, underneath it though. Like Carvins Deep finishes. 3 - ZR7 Trem with the arm holder switched to a stainless steel one. 4 - custom wound HSH pickups, active for low string pull, but with a circuit designed NOT to limit like EMGs. Failing that, the same but with an 18v circuit. 5 - 5 piece...

NICE
a buddy of mine got one from that company a few years ago too. (i remember the funny dude in the demo vids).
we ran that thing through a big muff and into my bass amp.
with your budget though it's going to be tight. you're basically looking at a small practice amp. i like the Peavey Rages, little 15watt tanks, run just over $100, has some built in distortion but it's hardly the...

you should be able to find an Ibanez RG series within that budget without any hassle. they're quite popular, especially with players who prefer a technical challenge to their playing.
it's an excellent choice for an intermediate instrument. it'll be enough to hold him over until he's ready to drop $1000+ into something special.

The shape of that guitar just confused me at first. I thought it was their answer to the Explorer until I found out what a Destroyer was. It's definitely a weird guitar, but it's unique, and not a lot of people have them. Especially from '81.
