QUOTE(rancho_gordo @ Nov 11 2009, 08:36 PM) Do you have time to come visit Rancho Gordo in Napa? Beans pair beautifully with wine! My wife and I were in yesterday and bought several packages of beans and some of that Mexican chocolate. By way of identification, we spoke of the health dept. problems you experienced - I'm the tall guy with mustache. Best, Jim

I haven't read the paper, but it seems that some of the criticism concerns how many tastes the human can recognize and appreciate. Some judges say they can rate 12, which seems unlikely. The scientists think four to six is a more likely...

Paul, A favorite trick in blind tastings is to serve the same wine in different bottles and observe the wide variance in opinions of the same wine...not to mention that no one recognizes that the samples are the same wine. --------------------

Thank you for that, Jim. I can imagine how hard it will be to leave. I've lived in rural Vermont for over 20 years, and I'm still surprised (and relieved) at how much more satisfying life is when I focus on the simple things.

The scenery is mostly rural, interspersed with cows, horses, lamas,...

This is an area covered in Ted Haigh's Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails . He has an RIP section for brands and ingredients that have died and will never return. However, the recent resurgence in cocktail popularity has helped with some ingredients, notably flavoured bitters. And places like Sonoma Syrup Company are producing high quality flavoured sugar syrups, similar to the ...

The suggestion I was given was Caol Ila, as it's a bit less mainstream. ha! so i got both Caol Ila 18 and Lagavulin 16 - both Islays but so different! both bery popular with the recipient (i might be leaning more towards ...
