I think you can get 1.5s down to about 500g. They`re fairly cushy too, but obviously not as much as 1.75s. You`ll have to decide whether you want an extra little bit of cusion or an extra little bit of acceleration- not a whole lot of difference either way IMO. You might want to just keep on truckin with the ones you have now and buy 1.5s when it comes time to replace them so you can judge for yourself.

On a geared bike it doesn't make much of a difference. I rode 900gr tires on mine for a while but recently changed them out for something about 200gr lighter, but just as puncture resistant but narrower. It feels a bit faster. The difference is that you can feel tire weight a lot more on a fixed gear. I can get my Pugsley up and moving and it's geared.

You could save nearly a pound of rotational weight. There are some flat resistant tires under 700g a piece.

I just bought a couple of Performance Gotham tires for my commuter. Feels heavy-- these tires are 930 grams. (26 x 1.75"). I'm not a weight weenie, but don't want the weight of a tire to slow my commute or negatively effect handling. Your opinion is much appreciated. TIA

I look like this actually: Again, I know the long hair can probably be deceptive but I wouldn't have thought that anyone under 70 years of age would still be making that mistake in this day and age. Immediately afterwords I yelled back "Thanks, but I'm a man!" She seemed indifferent at this revelation. Maybe next time I should get off the bike and start shouting chauvinistic slogans...

I'm curious to see what types of locks people are using to lock up their bikes when they are unattended. Personally, I don't leave my $1000+ bikes unattended, but for my sub $400 commuter, I recently purchased one of these chain locks: BIKE GAURD Warden lock It was only $30, but it seems pretty robust. I don't think I would be able to cut it with pocket sized tools, like some cable ...

If I don't hit a heartrate (estimated, monitor went tits-up) above about 145, I'm not riding, I'm cheating. (fwiw, 145 for me is about 80-85% max) A lot of people would say I spend a lot of time in the 'red zone', but that's where the endorphins are!

Ran across this blurb on Gizmag: http://www.gizmag.com/nike-hindsight...picture/854 44/ Not a bad looking set of shades, I like models without any framework around the main lens personally as they have a clear field of vision. I would try a pair out for sure!

Since this is a mtb site and I assume many if not all of you have another bike geared toward off-roading, I was wondering if some of you who commute with a no-frills, plain Jane bike sometimes take your pimped out mt. bike to work just for kicks or get a different ride feel, or just for change. If so, do you feel out of place riding it to work? Sorta like driving an SUV in the city sorta feeling....

Hey all, I'm riding a trek liquid right now and I'm wanting to commute some now. I am thinking of trying either a inexpensive road bike (sub $500) new or used or some slick tires. Any thoughts on roadbikes that fit the bill. I see a huge thread on slicks below already. thanks.

For about the 10th day this month it's topped 100. Yesterday at 104 I suffered a brutal headache after my commute home, about 40 minutes. I hydrated all day. It was the 1st time I wore a full brim cotton hat. Coincidence or result of the ride? What are the rest of you guys doing to mitigate the heat.

Real quick background story: I started commuting last year on an introductory MTB (HM Predator). After about 4 or 5 months I realized that I really enjoyed cycling to and from work so I decided to order a frame (Leader 526H) and build my own MTB. After about 9 months of switching out and upgrading parts on my Leader, I ended up with a bunch of spare parts. I decided to order another frame ...

I was about to post this on my blog, but realized that I am just irritable, so I thought I'd vent here where others might share my plight. Also, if I'm out of line on this, let me know as I (even at 38) have much to learn. Typed for my blog, pasted verbatim: This is less of a rant and more of a vent. I know that not everyone knows how to drive with bikes on the road, but there are some ...
