hardrock sport vs sette reken
Published (2009-11-13 12:20:00)
Its hard to compare them because the Hard Rock does not have a single size that matches one of the Reken. What I mean is the Reken comes in 16, 18, 20, and the specialized comes in 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23. I kind of compared the 18 inch Reken to the 17 inch Hard Rock, and they are basically the same bike except the Reken is longer and taller obviously than the 17 inch Hard Rock. Most of the angles are exactly the same. The difference are so...

help w/bike selection---

You're welcome. Another suggestion is to look at the women's forum here for more specific suggestions about bike fit and selection. I'm sure there is a lot of experience over there. David B.

Sette Flite or Sette Ace
Published (2009-11-10 01:51:00)
I have yet come to another halt in deciding between the two. Frame materials. They are both made out of alumunium, but the Ace is with 7005 alum., and the Flite is 6061 alum. I'm a big rider like I mentioned and prefer the stronger of the two. To my understanding, the 6061 is stronger, is that correct? It is constructed with heat treatment unlike the 7005. If it comes down to Flite, I will probably purchase the bike as a complete not the...

Need Input on which bike to buy
Published (2009-11-10 01:48:00)
I didnt look at all of your choices but generally at around $550 you should set a base line for 27 speeds and disc brakes. REI and Performance Bike have been having a price war with these lower to mid range bikes. REI has been offering the Ponderosa for $680 with an upgraded drive train. I think its particularly attractive with its longer top tube and wheel base. It would be a pretty decent descender. Performance Bike has had the Mongoose...

Rocky Mountain ETSX vs DW Link...
Published (2009-11-14 21:58:00)
Ok... A few things to start out with. 1) Dont get the first-gen ETSX, get the second (by which I mean the 4-5inch one, not the altitude which is the evolution of the etsx). The first generation there were [unfortuantely not uncommon] problems with frames failing (usually seattubes snapped between the upper and bottom ET links) - the secondgen (2006-8, if I remember right), are heavier but reliable. The second gen are really good bikes (good...

mnigro if your looking to bump your XC to AM by going to a longer travel fork it will work fine I have done that before just keep in mind what dirtydown has pointed out.
dirtydown that DJ200 is a smokin deal even if its a '05 model, real steel. A 100mm fork would do well for Urban/DJ.

I dont think a lot of the woman specific paint schemes are all that girly. Specialized Paint schemes are very unisex.

One thought I had was keep the Kona, adjust the fork to 100mm from 80mm,
remove crossmark tires and put something beefier on and make them ghetto
tubeless. That should ease my pain shouldn't it?

with a hundred dollar budget you are not going to get wheels, RD ,cables ,
pads, and a new seat. you could(should) single speed it for cheap but it
still wont be under 100. the wheels are what kills it.

Whatever breaks first. I usually upgrade my bike as something either stops working properly or I break something. What do you feel is the weak link on your bike right now?

I'm sure someone out there knows better than me, but I'm sure I've seen adapters to install 1 1/8" steerer tube forks on Cannondales with Headshocks.
I think 600 bucks is pretty steep for a bike goin' on nine years old.

What is the best full suspension mountain bike on a budget? I prefer hardtails for trail riding, but for a bit more agressive all mountain riding i would like a full susp. alternative without breaking the bank (under 1000$).

alright i'll be sure to clean out my seat tube, maybe with some paper towels and rubbing alcohol? (or what?)
just to be sure, the QR has two things to mention, the tightening bolt, and the tightening lever, i'm pretty sure you're talking about the seatpost not being able to slide up/down the frame or move side to side with the tightening lever in the "tight" position right?

Just ride and replace tires as necessary. Most knobbies hold up fine for short road rides. 10 miles to the trailhead will be a good warmup. I have about half your roundtrip to my local trail system and never drive there, I don't think I would at 10 miles either, at least I'd like to think I wouldn't.
Edit, sorry I just realized I didn't read your post thoroughly. What Sniper said makes lots of...

i agree! i love my XCL. i actually have it trimmed out as a XC rig right now at 29 lbs. All depends on what you want to do with it.
i think for him he's drawn towards the lighter frame weight, he wants to be more XC than trail.
i'll have to find a yeti in the area for him to ride. i've heard great things about yeti. how do you have your yeti setup?
