Track stand is the ultimate technique. I can't track stand for long, but I can track stand on anything (this includes half way down a flight of stairs). The second most important is the manual drop off. basically just manual off a step until you can time to land both wheels together every time. Once you have those two there will be little you can't go down. For going up, try riding up those steps. I can't happily roll up a...

You may also notice with a frame designed for cantilever brakes, that the increased power of v-brakes is so strong that instead of transferring that power to the rim, the seatstays flex outward with little to no net gain unless you use a brace (looks kind of like a horseshoe).

Here's the basic info, I'm 5'9" with a 30.75" biking inseam (via book between legs method) and around 165 lbs. Seems that I'm more short leg, long torso type. I've been to three bike shops and have been quick fit to 17" - 19" bikes and am unsure which bike works better, and I realize that the fit can be changed by moving around the seat and changing the stem which leads me to my question... ...

tubeless systems use a sealant that will seal up any thorn punctures immediately as they happen.
typically don't need new rims to go tubeless. possibly would need new tires depending on the make/model of your current ones.

You'll save money by buying a new bike. It will get expensive to upgrade cassette, derailleur, shifter and chain. I doubt your frame has the mounts for disc brakes. If it did, you'd have to replace the wheels. Add it up and you'll find with the money you'd spend on all the upgrades you could have a nice new or used bike.

All I bought a 2004 Trek 6700 for $250. The bike is in good condition. It's not mint as it's got a few scuffs and needs a good cleaning. The bike probably has nver been tuned up, but all the gears work and brakes are good as well. I will probably bring it in for a tune up just to be safe. Do you think that I got a good deal? Any other additional comments and what not? Can someone confirm I...

I find bar sweep more important than height. I don't know what the actual numbers are, but whatever the sweep is on Bontrager and Chromag bars it's great, it feels natural.
I've got low rise bars on all my bikes (save the BMX, that'd be dumb) and get the right bar height with head tube spacers, although it usually works out as one 5mm spacer and that's it.
Just pick the one that feels best ...

release tension? Most SPD type pedals have adjustable release tension, usually a little hex head screw on the back clip plate that can be truned clockwise to increase tension and counterclockwise to reduce tension. Backing it off makes it easier to release obviously. For begginers I usually back it out until it stops and then turn it back in four clicks to start with. Another option is going with...

Wear whatever you find to be the most comfy. There's a handful of guys that ride our trails with that style of helmet. They conform to the same protection standards.
