Carb tuning

CaddmannQ said... Carb tuning is specific to the altitude where you live, as air pressure varies with altitude. Does he offfer different kits depending on whether you live at various altitudes? Does it consider intake system mods? Does he mention fuel grades? Operator weight? Sprocket ratios? There's a reason they say their kits are a good "starting point." They are made to sell to people who cannot possibly do this on...

Does that balancer have rubber cushions between the gear and the balance weights? Nomads have these, and the do wear out.

Cadd, he has already raised the needles using shims under the needle clip. To richen up the midrange a bit more, and improve the blend into the main jet currently in the carbs, you can LOWER the clip one notch. This will raise the needle position relative to the main jet. Which means the taper of the needle will be out of the main jet sooner, making the mix richer. You can still use the shims, but move the needle clip down one notch. Then, if...

The only thing I will add is only to make one change at a time. You can't evaluate any difference if you do two or more things together.

Burning out water trapped in gas...

Smitty was talking about that a couple of weeks ago, lots of newer bikes don't have a reserve setting, just an idiot light to tell you you're getting low. I think I'm gonna see about changing mine out to the old style, this new stuff makes me nervous.

Burning out water trapped in gas...

I seem to remember that the additive that supposedly removes water in gas is mostly alcohol. So, with most gasoline at 10% ethanol, it should absorb the water in the gas and shouldn't be a problem. Right! If you don't use something it gets rusty! That applies to a lot of things! Keep telling your wife that!

Front caliper question
Published (2009-11-04 20:26:00)
As another year around commuter I can confirm the road sand and rain backwash will wear both pads and rotors fast. I'm on year two of my 07 gsxr1000 (22k miles), and am waiting for my current pads to expire so I can replace rotors & pads together. My rotors are heavily grooved and my pads wear fast. I am going to try and keep them cleaner this winter to hopefully prevent the new rotors from grooving.

hi, im new to this board, so please let me know if i do anything wrong. i have a 1993 750 gsxr. had it for several months now, and about two months ago, the headlight went out randomly, when i was riding. when i revved the engine, it kicked back in, not sure if that is correlated. a couple of weeks after that, it went out again, did not go back right away, despite revving. after a few minutes, it kicked back in again, while revving. since...

Sounds like it could be a loose or corroded wire. I'd give those a check first.

There are two chain tensioning devices. I am not sure about this one. I opened it up today for the doohicky-the lower one, http://www.klr650.marknet.us/doohickey.html , it does have problems. The doohicky has been tightened so much in one place that it has dents in the metal to the point of some small shrapnal. It is damaged and unadjustable. However- idk if thats the end of the story. ...

The procedure is to run the bike at a throttle position that gives the fuel system a chance to stabilize. That means at least a mile of running at full throttle. Pick a location where you can do that, in a gear that allows you to stay within the speed limit. For a bike like your Bandit, that may mean 2nd or 1st gear. Ride it at wide open throttle for at least a mile, then while at that speed and...

That noise is the starter relay trying to lock in and then transfer direct battery power to the starter. The starter switch itself may have corroded connections (not too likely). The starter relay, under the seat, near the battery, may have gained resistance to the point it cannot "lock in". Or more likely is that battery is low on power and cannot provide the power needed. The battery should be...

Old Harleys had a timing advance on the left handle bar it worked like a throttle. you might be able to make that work, or try a thumb throttle that come on Honda atv. But thumb throttles are not very comfortable.

Thanks Cadd for the info. From what I see in the window of the reservoir the fluid is clear with a very slight yellow tint. As far as leakage there is none at the connections or at the brake pistons. I have noticed that the fluid level has dropped in the window only slightly. So I’m just going to order the pads and do a thorough job of cleaning up the assembly and disc. Thanks again………………….....

Not to me it doesn't. Water going through the carb via the air intake makes a bike run well (up to a point). Water getting into a carb via the float chamber is bad news. And a bike that has a rusty tank and has water in the gas is a bike that needs some serious attention.

A backfire that you hear in your tail pipe is actually unburnt fuel igniting in the pipe caused by an exhaust gasket leak somewhere allowing in enough air to accomdate igintion set off by the heat of the exhaust pipe, most of the time by your exhaust port. A backfire back out through your intake is most likely caused by a fuel, air mixture that is off, mainly lean, and can be corrected ...

Perhaps you got a set of bars without knurling for the clamps. But keep in mind, those four inch higher grips transmit a much higher twist load at the clamps than do the 12" apes, or standard height bars. They are a longer lever, so it will be easier to twist the handlebar in the clamps. You could take the clamps off, and in the area where the clamps would go on the handlebar, use a hammer and...
