If there is a short on the bike it will be taking some of the battery charge so there might not be enough to operate the starter. You should examine the ignition switch and check the wires around the headstock. You might consider buying the Haynes manual on motorcycle electrics, there is a section covering fault finding. A lot cheaper than having the bike go up in flames! I'm thinking of getting one myself, there's loads of stuff I...

New tires, front fender does not...

The fender is different, but I think this proves that it can be workable. My fender is rubber or plastic, not chrome. I think the plastic is thicker, just enough, to make trouble. If the chrome fender will fit, I would give it a try. I gave you a title & dumped the other thread. As for the bike, you fixed vacuum leaks & now it refuses to start. Perhaps it needs more air because the carb idle air was turned down to try & compensate for the vacuum leaks (which usually make a bike idle too high.) But as for testing the coils, if you suspect a bad coil on a two coil bike the test is to swap the primary wires between the coils & see if the plug...

Being as the front fender is plastic, if the contact isn't extreme, why not have the contact area of the fender filed down to clear the tire. There can't be a whole lot of contact if your replacement tire is the same size as stock. If the fender is plastic, without a steel fender/fork brace under it, the fender is only there to minimize road spray. So filing back the contact area should not affect anything but mounting the fender.

There are more ways to short circuit a bike than having wires touching the frame. There is a logical sequence to finding this problem. If you have a meter you should connect it to the battery circuit and measure the current. If the bike is switched off there should be none (unless you have a clock or alarm). My guess is that you will see some current flow. Assuming that you do then it is a case of disconnecting plugs until the current flow...

yamaha tx 500 side cover

Thanks for the help. I got it off. The chain that goes around the alternator was put on the sprkets wrong. The chain was therefore loose and wore a groove in the bottom of the crankcase cover. The chain was hung up in this groove and would not allow the cover to come off. I put the chain on the right way and everything is fine. Somebody obviously didn't know what they were doing.

There are two covers. If you mean the one that covers the alternator and the balance/starter chains it may be held by the magnetism of the alternator or maybe the dipstick/filler plug is getting caught. There is a wire to the neutral switch as well, if I remember rightly. If it comes away 1/2" you must have removed all the screws. I don't think there is anything to stop the rear cover coming off...

It's true. The 883 engine can be rebuilt into a 1200cc engine. They both share the same basic engine cases & lots of other parts. In the long run it would be cheaper to just buy the 1200cc version to begin with

First thing I would go at is a NEW set of spark plugs for they do not last FOREVER. Less expensive then replacing the coils.
Mind you heat & trouble does sound a bit like coils I will agree.

If it was me I would bite the bullet and get the correct size tire installed. It's worth bearing in mind that the fender on some bikes also acts as a fork brace, that might be the case on your bike, so if you put something else on you could be compromising the handling. I'm not saying that is the case, however.

Use BikeBandit.com to see if the same part number is used for both model years. If the numbers are the same its a safe bet it will fit.

You must have one of the cheaper batteries on your bike & not the sealed ones that are so popular now, unless someone buys a chap battery from some large store.
Guess the thing is to removed the battery & put more water to all the damage done by the spilled battery to the acid. When dry you can repaint it.
The main Jpn m/c makers have NOT be putting in cheap batteries since ...
