how do disk brakes work on a bike?

Respectfully true. Drum can be mechanical or hydraulic. Disc are usually hydraulic, but on a bicycle, they have a caliper that pinches onto a rim, which is a disc, so, in essence, a mechanical disc type. dc

I can ride in most temps, but not most road conditions. Snow and ice on the road means the bike stays parked. This morning it was -1 and snowing. Heck I hope my pickup starts, much less my bike.

The comment was about how slow this board is, right? In my experience (many years on many boards in many subject areas), Internet discussion groups tend to get more active in the cold months. People are inside more and can't do their warm weather activities. I would be interested to see some usage stats on this board over a two or three year period. Just now, in the middle of a cold, rainy weekend afternoon in the Northeast, there were 12...

quote "students served as test subjects, and Mr. Hunt and others donned helmets and were subjected to blows by weights."
to lose any man who strikes students heads with weights is a terrible loss to humanity.
i have always thought it bizarre that you guys ride without helmets when it's so obvious what happens when you come off.

All motorcycle brakes I have encountered work strictly by a master cylinder
and the power of your hand braking, or foot on the back brake.

Your bike won't "break" from being stored outside, if you let it sit in a snow berm all winter its likely to not be in good shape in the spring. If you can, always store it inside, if not, get a good cover and go on.

I wouldn't think that the slightly heavier rim would cause you to loose traction. I would blame the tire. Have you ever used that brand / model of tire on a different bike?

You mean to tell me you are one of these fair weather riders, when a little bit of winter comes in you quit riding?
Come on, you are not in Alaska, are you?

It certainly wouldn't hurt to clean the bike a bit before putting it away.

To help get rid of a poor paint job on my 450 engine, I used an aluminum and mag wheel cleaner; it's a mild acid, so you have to be careful. It leaves a dull surface, which will oxidize, so for areas you plan to leave plain, brushing with WD40 and small-caliber bore brushes and brass brushes on open areas helps put a smooth patina on it.
For polished aluminum, I use a clear coat for bare metal...

Yeah, I was out on the bike today, high winds and all. I refuse to stop
riding untill we actually get enough snow on the ground to make it so I
can't ride safely. THEN I will park the bike.

No. But I have allowed them when I sold. Depends on the person who comes. Do they look legitimate? Do they have a license and endorsement? Can you hold their license while they ride? Are they rather seriously interested in the bike?
Are they talking about cash? Have they brought cash with them?
I guess the other thing would be to ride it yourself and allow them to ride behind, in ...

being 18 and on a bike is probably going to get you bent over at just about any insurance company, especially on a sportbike.
