Good posts. I had gotten a sense here and there (with the character of Kenneth on 30 Rock) for instance) that it was a stereotype of rural white Southerners that they were uncircumcised (unfortunate that there was always at least a slight level of looking down one's nose about this stereotype!). In the Midwest it's definitely highly highly prevalent. I agree too that it's going to be really key when the intact children of today...

I still want to know why an OB who specializes in woman's parts thinks they have any business messing around with something that they know nothing about. (except how to remove it of course)

That's a really difficult situation since you don't know each other at all and would be an awkward conversation at a holiday party. Having said that the previous poster's suggestion is perhaps the most appropriate if you wanted to give it a shot. Perhaps recall your experience with your son along the way.

I would put it in your birth plan. Better for you to put it there, and not needed to, then to omit it and have it happen. If he is going to go to the nursery, I would definitely put a little card or note easily seen in his bassinet saying something like "I'm intact, my parents do not consent to any manipulation or retraction of my foreskin-Thanks!" I would also suggest you or your husband accompany your son whenever he...

Quote: I have a friend who kept her son intact but when he was three the doctor diagnosed phimosis and he was circumcised. There are certainly cases of boys this age being diagnosed with phimosis when they have nothing but normal intractability. (Though in that specific case, who knows.) In those cases, if the doctors had been honest they would say "I feel like circumcising your son, it makes me some easy money. I understand you are...

I've never heard of liquid acidophilus. I will have to see if our local health food store even carries that! The concept makes sense, though! If they don't have it, maybe I'll just add a little water (or better yet, breast milk) to the powder I have. Thank you!

There's absolutely no need to do anything soon. It's not true that surgery is less traumatic for babies -- we have this backwards idea that everything should be done before they can speak and form memories, but there's good evidence that babies may not be able to articulate traumatic experiences as memories later, but these experiences still affect them. Waiting until your baby is older, bigger, and stronger means better pain...

Even with MRSA though I'm not sure it would be that much safer doing circs in a ped's office.....esp. because of the risk of bleeding. And ped's offices are full of germs!

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday while watching a viagra commercial! I was at work (yes, we were watching TV) and almost commented, but didn't because I was the only female in the group. Why doesn't the commercial mention that circ may have something to do with ED? (Well, that and cardiovascular issues, thanks to the standard American diet most people in the US are on--and taken ...

During the 1950's to the 70's about 90% of boys were circumcised and the rates dropped to the 60% range by the 80's and in the 90's dropped to about 50% of boys circumcised. So the figures you saw were probably about right or a little high.

Way easier to care for an intact infant. The key is to NEVER let anyone near his penis.
No one touches it - no problems!

That is so awesome! Your mama sounds like a great lady. I'm sure that you've already thanked her for leaving you intact. Especially with you being an adult, circ was probably even more common back then, so good for her for not being a sheep and following the flock.
I've always wondered what some of the thought process was behind parent's decision to leave boys intact when it was even ...

Is it the glans, remnant foreskin, shaft skin or scar line where the issue is?
It might be yeast, but with out more details it's hard to eliminate other possibilities like the beginnings of meatal stenosis, or adhessions, etc.
I'd start with lots of diaper free time to air everything out, and strip the diapers if they are cloth. If your using sposies, some brands have scents and ...

Because there are serious moral problems with cosmetic, medically unnecessary surgery on a non-consenting infant without anesthesia, but the procedure brings in $$$.

I would assume since you said there is no blood or puss that it is seperation trauma. My son's penis has been swollen twice like this--it was kind of like a fat lip, purplish, and double the normal size. Both times a bath with baking soda seemed to help and in a day or two it was gone. It sounds from your post your son is already on the mend. IMO, I think a trip to the ER is unnecessary unless he...

Unfortunately, I don't think something like this could ever be allowed to establish a precedent. Even if society's views one day evolve to see RIC for what it is, they will have to treat it like a " truth and reconciliation" situation as we have seen in South Africa, Rwanda, etc. When an injustice is sufficiently widespread, it cannot be allowed to later be the object of lawsuits as the ...

If it's not affecting his function in any way, then you absolutely do not have to do anything. If the function isn't being affected, then doing a reconstructive surgery is purely cosmetic.
If he decides when he reaches puberty or adulthood that he wants surgery, then it will be his decision and it will also be easier to do accurate surgery, when the penis is fully developed.

How about a simple:
"there is no reason for you to handle my son's penis so I prefer to keep his diaper on - thankyouverymuch"

There is also the it's what Americans are used to argument
And the famous they won't remember/it doesn't hurt them argument
And lets not forget, it'll only have to be done late and it hurts more then lie.
