Anybody know anything about...

Normally you don't want to do anything strenuous like jogging or agility training till they're 2 years old, because that's when their growth plates close (and of course get him started slowly, like you would for yourself). I think you may be able to x-ray to check that, but I'm not sure if you'd want to go to those lengths.

My sisters dog loves the TV. She particularly likes nature shows and dog shows. She has a pretty good track record for picking winners when we watch Westminster!

Would you do chemo if your pet...
Published (2009-12-10 09:35:00)
No I wouldnt. To much stress for the animal with no real way to know just how badly they are hurting and their quality of life. Better to let them go peacefully than drag out the pain and discomfort. I have never had a pet with cancer but I did deal with a similar situation where I could have done things to keep her with me a bit longer but that would have been selfish of me and in the end she would have died anyway.

Would you do chemo if your pet...

Yes, we did get a second opinion. We saw 2 vets down here, and then we spent the day at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Michigan State in Lansing. We saw a veterinary oncologist there. She did encourage us to do the chemo. I asked about how the heartworm might effect the chemo and she didn't really have an answer for that and she said she had no experience with chemo on a dog with HW disease. I suspect that's why they would like...

Cat Spaying
Published (2009-12-10 11:47:00)
Thanks everyone! I'll check into the SNAP program a little more and ask for help interpreting. I did ask a bunch of questions, but I am not in this field nor do I have a lot of knowledge about spaying, etc. The information I received was general and common, such as "We take excellent care of your pet" (high cost) and "I would bring my pet here because this is actually less expensive than the place I took...

Natural pet ownership... vaccines?
Published (2009-12-03 16:30:00)
This is what I do, take it for how you want it My puppies receive ONE shot of parvo and distemper when they are approx 12 weeks old. They receive a rabies shot when they are around 2 years old and that is it for LIFE. They are also raw fed which I think definately boosts their immunity.

Natural pet ownership... vaccines?
Published (2009-12-04 05:46:00)
I know at the vet clinic I work at, the only thing we are strict about is the bordatella vaccine. I hardly ever check other vaccines when an owner schedules to board their dog. My boss and vet knows I'm not vaccinated other than rabies anymore, and hasn't said anything about that really. I'm a BIG early socialization pusher. To people, to other dogs, etc etc etc. I socialize my puppies everywhere very early on (IMO, a dog is FAR...

Bird with a broken wing?
Published (2009-12-06 12:12:00)
My grandmother used to take in birds. Generally she had the best success with very young birds who had fallen out of the nest. She hand raised 2 humming birds that were able to fly away in the end and she had a crow named Jack that she had nursed through an injury and that hung around her property for years afterward. I wish I had been able to ask her advice.

I'm so sorry. I experienced this with my cat last year. I went to Catster (maybe someone on Dogster can do the same) and someone there pointed me to some experts with pet seizures, but in the end I had to put him to sleep. Just keep him as comfortable as possible, let him know how loved he is, and how much love he has brought into your lives. If it comes to it, you will know when...

Our pup was a bit like this when he was little, but he never drew blood. When he would get overexcited he would jump at our faces and snap his teeth, a few inches away - you'd hear his teeth clicking against eachother. We knew this was over-excitement, and we knew that this behavior was completely unacceptable, so we worked hard on it by communicating to him every single time it happened ...

Have you looked into ordering dog food online? When I was researching the healthier brands, I found some really good deals with $5 or free shipping and it was cheaper than the store I would have to drive an hour to get to. Just an idea As for the stool sample, I took in a runny one once and they found *nothing*. Then a different clinic had the dog for a few hours, he had diarrhea there as ...

I would ask them how they keep the bill so low. I would also ask your regular vet if they have heard of the program. I know in my area we have a low cost spay/neuter mobile service. Its nice for people with strays and barn cats, but my vet, whom i trust, tells me its not a good idea for pet cats. They keep the cost low by skimping on certain things and running the cats through assembly ...

I buy fancy feast wet food (48c each, one a day) and eagle pack dry food ($9 a bag.) the bag lasts a couple of months I think. $170 wet food a year $60 dry food a year $150 vet bills (if something happens which it hasn't plus vaccines) I am guessing at about $380 a year? You can do it for far less by not giving wet food.

A vet friend of mine thinks that fleas have become pretty resistant to frontline an Advantage. We still do it because it tends to keep the fleas down, but it really does not completely work for us either. We do a LOT of vacuming and use borax around the house, and are hoping that the frost comes soon to kill the fleas.

I don't personally have an spiders but my dh wants one REALLY bad and honestly, I'm not keen on one being in my house. I mean, I sleep with 4 snakes in my bedroom, what else does he want Anyways, he knows a lot of people that have spiders and the care, etc. of them so I know a little about them. They are very easy to care for. They don't need much at all. A rose hair doesn't need anything...

Yes, the Convenia injection she got should be effective for the entire course. They've had this available in human medicine for quite a while - we're just catching up in the vet field. A prescription diet is a good idea if your cat has crystals. It keeps the urine within a certain pH range that discourages the formation of crystals. There are no OTC foods that will do this, any food ...

No, I see boxer X husky. With the mix and his gae, he probably is very high energy. TBH, sounds like she just may not like dogs. Better she admits it now than when he is older, and she just harbors that resentment towards her DH, I think.

Many breeds could work. We need more info. Is there a size or weight restriction for dogs in your apartment? Breed restrictions? Some places allow all dogs, others dogs under a certain weight limit. And some restrict certain breeds (and not just the ones you might think- my old apartment banned Siberian Huskies and a few other breeds not normally listed on breed bans) Are there allergies ...
