my daughter has a book basket in her room. it is filled with readers at her level & for her interest. she reads them at bedtime & this seems to help a lot. we're off for holiday break currently, but she still reads at night time. maybe something like this would help?? just a though. hth. ETA - keeping books at an easier reading level for your dd is absolutely okay imho. my daughter's reading level is chapter books,...

My oldest dd has auditory processing disorder and ADHD (among other things) We had a lot of things happen last school year that resulted in us enrolling her in public back in January to finish her K year. Now, mind you, when my fourth dd was born my oldest was 4y5m so they are all really close in age, and just 3 weeks before ps started last school year we moved to a new city a half hour away. My oldest had a lot of changes, and she NEVER has...

My son finished his first ETC primer last night, so we had a party! Complete with a cake and a rendition of the happy birthday song He was so excited. I am so proud of him because he has come such a long way in the past few months and it has pretty much been self directed. When we started our school yr in Sept. he was fisting the pencils still, had a ton of trouble following directions(an on going issue but improving ), and could only write...

If you feel in your heart that home is where he belongs- bring him home! I would focus on repairing your relationship, working on difficulties, and finding a rhythm before worrying about academics at all. If all he wants to do is play legos- let him. mama, for all you have been through. I'm so sorry- and I hope it gets better and soon.

Sounds totally normal to me, too. Have you tried just turning away and ignoring the behavior? You know, they start fitting out, and you just kind of ho hum, I think I'll go do the dishes now, la la la, and continue on as though it doesn't affect you at all (even tho inside, we are like AAAAGGHGGHHH!!!)? I know sometimes they are really looking for a response, and when you're kind of like, oh well when you're ready...

Honestly, if it's possible I'd do a test administered by someone other than you. It proves that you couldn't have given him the answers or fudged the test. Do Sylvan or Kaplan do grade level testing? Maybe check with them? When we tested DD (our state requires it) we used a standardized test, but it wasn't online and you sent it back to be graded. So you don't have enough time for that.

I might look into the Carolyn Haywood Betsy books, the Cam Jansen books, the Wayside School books, Ramona, Little House in the Big Woods (written at a slightly easier level than the later books), the early Betsy Tacy books (like the Little House books, they get more advanced as the series progresses). The All of a Kind Family books and some of Elizabeth Enright's books might still be a little ...

Just to play devil's advocate, but my parents kind of freak out about entertaining my kids too. I say "you've already done this!" but they don't really remember what they did when we were kids. I have a preschooler He turned four in sept. I also have an older child do I still get to play? I found a ton of great books with ideas at the library. Gymboree has a nice one, and there's Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready which is kind of hit or miss with that age IMO.

I can't help you specially with that but I can say we used a little flower garden up till grade 4 and now use Oak Meadow. I like oak meadow a bit more because it is all laid out in a way that works for us. Less leg work on my part and I can research waldorf in my own time and pass and add things to it all as I see fit. I felt a bit boxed in with LFG oddly as if stepping outside it was not ok ...

Best HS find under 10$? For fun and information.... What is your best find for educational purposes that is under $10 or so? Mine is a world map. I have it posted on the wall and we consult it regularly. I love it.

Remember that The Well-Trained Mind recommends notebook pages for first graders that consist of a picture and a copied sentence or so; there's no requirement that the child be able to write independently. Most reading is done by the parent, aloud to the child, with plenty of opportunity for coloring, drawing, or other kinds of artistic expression. The parent begins written work very simply with...

I am new to homeschooling. My girls and I started in October, following a traumatic experience in public school. (Older kids teasing my 5-yr-old) This was a difficult decision for me, as DD was enjoying school and otherwise doing well, and our younger dd in Pre-K was having a great time as well and asks about it regularly. Still, I have made every effort to make the most of our ...

Tammy Takahashi forwarded your post to a list I'm on, and I loved it. Thank you for taking the time to be so thorough. I didn't make it through much of the original article-- her offensive protrayal of who homeschoolers are, and why we homeschool was ruining my Christmas spirit, and so I'm putting off reading it until after Christmas. I skimmed it quickly, though. I wish she provided ...
