Remember that baby got 4 weeks of breastmilk - that may not have happened without your encouragement and support.

Snort - I love that quote! Isn't there a saying "if there ain't a problem don't fix it"? We'd see a lot fewer mothers in tears at LLL and other meetings if it weren't for people around them to fix this or that about the breastfeeding relationship (or about being born with a foreskin, for that matter).

I get them all the time. I leave them at my pediatrician's office. The practice is very pro-bf, but they have some patients that could use the coupons.

I was breastfed. My mother was not but my father and his siblings all were (rare in the 60s, I guess.) DH was breastfed but his little sister was not. I don't know if his mother was but I know that his father wasn't. DS is 2nd gen on both sides, 3rd gen and probably much, much further on my side paternally.

Meepy Cat, No, hardly any pediatricians in the area have priviledges at the hospital I birth at. The other hospital is a Children's Hospital, so most of the peds work there. The same neonatologists work at both hospitals, but the nurses are better at the one I birth at, and some are more accomodating. How did you respond to the nurse that tried to send you away from your baby?? I think I'd have filed a formal complain about that...

Published (2009-11-05 15:53:00)
I believe I read somewhere that even giving a baby milk from a smoker is still better than formula. I understand the aversion, I would hesitate too, but I also really really hate formula. Also, I believe I heard that wet nursing, like surrogacy, in many areas is actually illegal. I don't understand why and I think it's completely ridiculous, but I wonder what the problem is? In the adoption forum, I was reading a thread where a woman...

I'm not 100% sure if DH was breastfed, but I *THINK* so - his family is definetly supportive of breastfeeding - or at least, his moms' side of the family is. TBH I don't know his dad's side very well (they're kind of wierd) and have no idea if his dad was ff or bf. *I* nursed till * was 4 Mom was ff, my dad I'm pretty sure was bf from the comments his mom makes when hold the kids - 'I haven't had any...

I do not have much advice, just to say I understand. One SIL never tried to BF, the other gave up after a month. I had similar feelings. We still have very different parenting styles, and I just have to remember that we are different people and have different kids. As long as they follow my rules as pertains to my son, we are OK.

I was formula fed, so was DH. I have no idea how far the formula feeding goes back though....I doubt my mom was BFed because her mom worked. Maybe my grandparents though.
DD damn well BETTER nurse her kids. And if I ever had sons they better pick women to marry who will BF too. If not, they will get an earful.

I very much doubt that there is a law (federal or state) covering this issue, but I wonder why, if you had a baby in the NICU, you would *want* to forbid artificial nipples. If you forbid the use of artificial nipples for a babe in the NICU, you either need to be able to commit to camping out permanently in the NICU yourself once your child is off parenteral nutrition and feedings by gavage tube...

I take them and shred them. I do not pass them on because I'm not convinced that there isn't some way the formula company can track them and see which ones are used. And the more that are used the more likely they will be to continue to use this method of reaching their target audience. If it doesn't work then they won't continue to spend money on it. I have spent and continue to spend many ...

I would anonomously call the church and make up a story. . . . something to the effect of "I am considering visiting your church and have heard rumors that some local churches are not allowing babies to be fed in the service and since I didn't want my baby to be exposed to germs (h1n1 and such) I wanted to make sure I could feed my baby in their service." I would do this to see if it is OK to ...

I think its a beautiful and wonderful thing. I really do. But, unfortunately, most people think it's gross. You wouldn't believe the looks I got and the comments I received when people found out I was bottle feeding my daughter donated breast milk. It's really quite sad that people think it's better for a baby to get formula, full of all sorts of crap, instead of breast milk, whether or not it ...

Uh-oh, there was a loooong thread about this very commercial some time ago here on MDC. It was a very controversial thread because of Code violations in the commercial (if I remember it right).

I would try not to waste too much worry on it. Yeah, you probably could have made your point in a more gentle way, but, frankly, so could she. You were no more rude than she was--perhaps less, since she covered you up first.
I'm sorry you're having to deal with this as well as the loss of your grandfather.

I don't think I've ever posted in this forum before, but I just wanted to say in response to this that even as a 30-year old mother I wasn't able to eat and breastfeed my son at the same time. My breasts are just too big and unwieldly, I had to hold DS with one hand and my breast with the other hand the entire time. And early on, most of his feedings were on average 20 minutes, so ...

Wow! That must have taken you ages to carve out! I bet the breastfeeding symbol really stands out once it has a candle inside it. Nice!
