DH is a lawyer (in three states) and tells me that generally it's considered unconstitutional to force someone to comply with a medical procedure. Parental rights do supercede the law unless the hospital gets a court order from a judge that has determined it's in the best interest of the child to do the refused procedure. Given the expense, no hospital is likely to go to all that trouble over the eye drops. Usually that's...

The biggest thing I have found to prevent resentment was to allow the siblings hands on with the baby. To allow them to hold or carry (even if you hover). To allow them to touch the baby a LOT and most everywhere (they are curious and like to poke the baby in the nose and mouth and fingers, etc) while I keep careful watch and remind them to keep it gentle. I remind them that Baby can "break" so we have to be careful, but they...

Hmmm interesting. I had the swine flu at 31 or 32 weeks and it was very mild. My 17 month old had a worse case but even then not worth a shot IMO. My older two kids did not contract it.

My DS will be 5 soon. He's pretty excited about the baby. Mind you, I've aslo noticed a change in his behaviour in the past couple of months. He's become more clingy with me and always wants me attention, which I am happy to give. We have already bought him a special toy for the birth of his sibling. I thought going forward, due to his age he will be quite capable of helping out. I can get him to help with diaper changes and...

I think it probably depends on what exactly you mean by "obstetrics." Ina May says in her Guide to Childbirth that the techno-medical model of maternity care has been around for about two centuries- a product of the industrial revolution.

I had a really sever 2nd degree tear - took 3 midwives to determine that ie was not a 3rd degree. I had really bad pain until I was 12weeks pp. At that point I went back to my midwife and was really adamant that something was wrong - and I was right. I had horrible granular tissue that had to be gotten rid of with silver nitrate. If thats the case for you ask to be numbed!!! They numbed ...

When was your first ultrasound? (an early one in the first trimester is much more reliable for dating than a later one) What position did you push in last time? Did they get you to move around to help him fit out? If they didn't and he still fit out fine, I'd assume there was still some wiggle room/space, right? Also, (gosh I have a lot of questions!) how is your blood sugar? Do you think ...

No specific advice. I just wanted to say, first of all, it's so sweet of you to drop everything to help your sister like that. But the best way to help is to find out what she wants and needs, and do that. For me, I'm super independent, so it was exhausting and frustrating when my MIL was scrubbing my bathtub (of course, that may have been more about her, but thats another story. lol). But of ...

If you're not worried baout children visiting, you can ask that folks limit how long they stay. say, 15-30 mins unless these are the kinds of friends and family that will cook, clean or do some laundry for you. Also, I know there are meal scheduling websites that are used to coordinate when folks are dropping off meals for families. It would not surprise me if there are sites for ...

Have you tried turning your hot water heater all the way up, waiting a while, then filling the tub most of the way with cool water, and then adding 1 tank's worth of REALLY hot water? That should do the trick. Also, you can have someone heat water on the stove and add pots of hot (not TOO hot, obviously!) water while you're in there if you run out of hot water.

It's all pink eye. That's what "conjunctivitis" is. That's not to say it can't be very serious, it all depends on the pathogen. I do not know how serious an infection would be from the bacteria you named, but they are not common causes of infection.

I would like to suggest that you consider hiring a doula. We are trained to help moms with this kind of situation and to help with writing a birth plan, talking to nurses...etc. Usually the nurses are the ones who really impact how the birth goes - they are the power houses of the hospital. You will need to be bold enough to say no to some things - and so will your hubby. It takes a lot of ...

In the hospital they'll basically insist on the IV antibiotics if you haven't tested negative. I tried to refuse and they hounded me until I gave in. Even then since they gave it 3 hours before the birth they drew a blood sample from DS's head and made us stay longer for monitoring. It was awful. One alternative is to only give antibiotics if baby comes a little early or water is broken ...

I have had two very nice hospital births which were natural, no interventions (except for the IV of abx which my heart condition requires), and included delayed clamping of the cord with #2. The reason my births have gone so well is that I have a good, natural-birth supportive/midwife-minded OB, and also (per his guidance as well as what I've read here), I wait until we're very far along in...

I'll look for a pic of my oldest and scan it in for you. He was 10lbs 6 oz at 2 wks old. He was 9 lbs 2 oz at birth. He had a 15.5 inch head and 15.5 inch chest at birth. He was 22" long. I am 5' 2" and I delivered him vaginally. Good luck! You will be able to birth this beautiful little one!!! Take care,

I did not have the urge to push with DD. She was in the wrong position (is it posterior??). It was a very long, almost 3 hours, and pretty difficult. I'm guessing the reason is her position. Sorry not much help!

We won't be doing it, because we don't cut the cord until there isn't any blood left in it. I don't know anyone who used banked cord blood, which doesn't mean there aren't people out there of course. I always figured the blood did most good where it belongs, in the baby.

I labored in a tub when I was having DS, but that was 5.5 years ago. Their hospital policy was no birthing in the tub, but you could labor. That may have changed in more recent years. I now live in a different state so I don't have contact w/ those midwives and that particular hospital any longer. If you are interested I can PM you the hospital name.
