Just an update on my read of _The Pillars of the Earth_. I am really enjoying it well. It is certainly well written and parts are very suspenseful. The chapter when Jack did what he did (you know if you know) I was really unable to stop reading the chapter even though I was well past bedtime. It is quick and easy to read. To me that is the mark of a good author. BOb

Although it's not billed as a skeptical publisher, the Westar Institute (home of the Jesus Seminar and publishers of The Five Gospels ) does contribute to Enlightenment ideals by applying the methodologies of science and historical research to Biblical and Bible-related texts. I recently send the following letter to them via snail-mail: <><><> Westar Institute Polebridge Press Willamette...

I thought the first third was fairly interesting, the second third had me gripped, and the last third was a struggle. It reminded me of 'Catch 22' - a one-theme novel that would have been better as a short story. I liked the evocation of dream-like scenes, and the overall sense of pessimism and futility was interesting. I imagine it was supposed to be an allegory of a human life from birth to death, and all the inconsequential things...

Ella Minnow Pea is a novel about words and wordplay. The subtitle calls it "A Progressively Lipogrammatic Epistolary Fable." A lipogram is a story written without using a chosen letter or letters. Epistolary means the story is told using the letters the characters write to one another. It's progressive because as the story goes on more and more letters are banned by the government. One more definition, a pangram is a...

In school we were assigned to read Great Expectations. This is was when we would get our thick English book and it had stories and books in it. Well, apparently the one we read was the abridged version. I tried to pick up the unabridged version (not realizing that I had only read the short one) and could barely make it to chapter 10!!! It was so painstakingly detailed beyond necessary (imho)!

I'm reading Weber's Hell Hath No Fury at the moment, and I plan to read his In Fury Born next (I've read the ' original' version, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he did with it). I always recommend anything by Weber.

A good selection of books and I wouldn't be disappointed to read any of these. But in the end plumped for The Tim Machine as it's been on my own "to-read" list for ages.

But I wish they would offer their subscription as an e-magazine in pdf rather than a paper magazine. The American Skeptic is the same - they insist on paper.

I can't tell you how many times I've started Joyce's Ulysses . So many times that I know the first few words "Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead.." I get annoyed that the book defeats me. I've heard parts of it read out and it's wonderful. I might try an ebook version.
I've read the first volume of Proust's epic but didn't go any further. I must try harder with great ...

Thanks! I love Stephen King, although lately he has been hit or miss. Last one I really enjoyed was The Cell. Haven't finished Ur yet.

The music world is full of one hit wonders. Can you think of any authors that had that sci-fi one hit wonder novel?

Okay apparently I'm not going crazy I did upload this book a year ago or so but have finally gotten around to reading the book.
However MobieRead was asked to remove the a publishing house claiming it was a copyright violation. However one of the Mods has confirmed the book I uploaded is in PD. I've asked the mod if they still want the book, but that is pending their reply.

Apparently Classics is a very popular month. 9 books to choose from this month, and most, if not all of them are PD and free for the download.
