> If your goal is to create a softmast source for a harvest aid/supplimental food source you may consider an improved variety of apple. I have also seen pears do well, but they tend to be susceptible to damage from disease and insects if they are not maintained well. I usually recommend that folks find a good blight-resistant apple variety that grows well in your area. See MSU extension http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p0966.pdf...

> You can get quicker production out of Japanese Persimmons, but you could also consider Chinese Chestnuts. They start producing quickly and the deer love them. I believe in Christianity as i believe the sun has risen; not because I see it, but because by it i see everything else

> Thanks for the info on the trophy pear trees. Going to check into those. At my age, I don't have the time to wait forever, so it looks like persimmons are out for me. Pears might be just the ticket however. Proud member of PETA...."People Eating Tasty Animals!"

Persimmon Tree Questions
Published (2009-11-30 12:30:00)
> If you want to plant persimmon trees from seed you need to find a good pile of Coon Dung that has seeds in it. Collect those seeds for some reason running through the coons digestive tract does something to the seed. Plant it but leave it outside where the winter can get to it. It needs to have cold temps to also do something to the seed. It is a slow slow slow grower and would plant some but dont expect much from them. Your children...

I planted persimmons 5 years ago and the trees were about 8 inches tall now 5 years later they are 14 inches long....very very slow grower. I did some research about crab apples, persimmons, and pear trees. Persimmons are a slow grower, crab apples are know to diseses, but pears grow good here in Mississippi. They are also drought tolerant. I suggest planting pears...

Why don't you plant a mix of both? I am thinking of mixing up some of those with some regular beans, cowpeas, okra, sunflowers, corn, and maybe some alceclover or vetch mixed in. Will probably plant and then ring it about 30 yards wide in clover and winter wheat in fall so you can see them coming and going easily. Official wild game taste tester

Doesn't sound like your neighbors will let you keep them around but, Wood ducks love acorns. Maybe planting a few Gobbler Sawtooths near the creeks edge. They also love corn, if no one is hunting them place a corn feeder near the creek where it will throw the corn in shallow water. Wheat and Milo are also good. If you have an area that you can plant and then flood it...

You will see growth from both now, but you are right you will see quicker growth now out of the crimson, both will really take off in the spring. The Crimson has a larger leaf about double to triple of that of the durana at maturity, the leaves and stalks will look different. You are probably seeing some of both. I got your email, will try to call tomorrow. ...

Not at all. If your plot is not as thick as you like. You can also put you a bag or two of wheat on it. I do that all the time to thicken them up when the deer are eating them down. Besides wheat is cheap. Let him walk, he'll be a goodun next year!
