So it's not the word or the concept that's the problem, it's the morons. I don't think the concept of treachery or treason is ridiculous or outdated particularly, though I agree they are terms that should be used with care. That so few prosecutions occur for treason in most developed countries is testimony to the regard that the law has for the appropriate use of the term.

Not at all, I spoke about it to a colleague in Xiamen the other day and he's just had his first child, his family are not big on only children so they have been saving for 10 years to pay the fine. Even then that will still lead to neutral growth, he said he could never afford 3. All these policies are dead in a Catholic country of course. I'll...

I can understand that. I didn't say all opportunites are equal. However, I include connections into Effort. You have to make the effort to get and keep those connections happy enough to be useful. That requires Effort and Talent. Money provides you easier access to opportunities, but not having money does not shut the door on those opportunities, just makes it harder. Boo hoo. Buck up and get after it. Quit whining about bread and water...

In my old company most of the executives were Masons. The current systems are rigged to make sure the wealthy stay at the top. It's ludicrous to think differently. You need to be unnaturally lucky or talented to become a millionaire if you're born working class. But having said that I know several - all immensely clever, driven & fortunate. As someone who quit their cushy job to start his own business and is actively working...

And don't give that "same opportunities" crap. Why not? Look, by your own logic: What if you haven't worked hard? Do you still deserve to provide a better life for your kids? Because there are more people born into money than...

The idea that there is nothing great or transcendent about us, that humans are an accidental product of evolution that will relatively soon disappear again, more or less without a trace and the universe won't even notice, that there's no grand plan to any individual life and that whatever you do...

Christian U, on 27 December 2009 - 04:06 PM, said: Out of interest, and because it ties into the whole idea of men feeling threatened by gay men - How many of you have been hit on by gay people, and how did (or would) you feel about it? I get hit on by gay men far more often than by women. Which itself is annoying, but the fact that they do it doesn't bother me.

I think it's subtler than that; humans have an innate need to create story, to link seemingly random facts with narrative. The less facts you have, the more we need to fill on from ourselves - and in those gaps the Gods were born.
We have a need for a sense of completeness, of unity. I think the urge to believe, faith, is a product and consequence of that.

No one told you Mike?
We only make it to the end of 2012.
I think the green movement will gain considerable momentum. I think we've become considerably health conscious over the past decade and I only expect that to continue. There will be a 3D television in every home.
Scientifically I think stem cell research will visit new frontiers, and technologically I'd imagine we'll see some ...

And yet if they intended to fix things on their own then it would be the easiest thing in the world for them to commit to such changes publicly in a global summit and come off a the big heroes. ...

James B, on 15 December 2009 - 08:16 PM, said: A) The social stigma associated with lesbians is much less severe than that associated with gay men. This goes double for politics, where the stereotypical traits associated with lesbianism, right or wrong, dovetail with much of what voters are looking for, ie " tough on crime". If you hold up the stereotype of lebsianism next to the ...
