I have the same issues with X8 an Windows 7. The exact same thing with the back button no longer working at all, and not being able to focus on a window until CTRL+ALT+DEL-ing. This is definitely a hardware RELATED issue, because it happened in the installation environment as well. I think maybe it's a receiver issue, but not sure how to test such a thing.

Be careful, clicking Rebuild will toss away all the previous indexing, sending you back to square one. I have a Windows 7 Gadget for Indexing, but there is no way that I have found to say "Use all resources and CPU cycles to speed up the Indexing process NOW". No way to put the Index process into overdrive, you know? That would be very handy.

Plain Documents folder icon?
Published (2009-12-18 21:56:00)
Problem The "Documents" folder appears as a plain icon when accessed via two different locations from the Vista Desktop UI and doesn't work as expected. However, the redirected "Pictures", "Music" and "Videos" folders which all follow the "Documents" folder, have their correct icons (translucent Green) displayed under both issue scenarios...

I'm using this add in for index and search my account in Outlook. With Lookeen you can also add any folder on your system to be included in the search index... As I could experience it fortunately does the indexing in the back not using that much resources. So far it found almost everything I intended to look for :) Maybe worth a look and try...

PNG Wallpaper support removed...
Published (2009-12-19 23:53:00)
this problem might possibly have something to do with the enabling of web content. I had a similar problem under XP and recently rectified it by reenabling web content on the desktop. Just make sure to double check that the registry entry isn't there after enabling active content under gpedit.msc, not sure if that would occur in vista though but I had to under XP.

I had the same issues and the explorer.exe in the Winlogon did not work for me. However I did notice something odd on the Userinit reg entry. I referenced another machine and found the entry to be incorrect. on the HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/Current Version/Winlogon/ the Userinit should be C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe, Try this on those where the Explorer.exe fix did...

I notice you have double-posted and I have replied to this one. As you don’t have the two registry keys mentioned in the other thread, try creating them:
Click the Windows Orb (Start), type regedit, press Enter and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and right-click in the right pane > New > DWORD, type the name WallpaperOriginX and press Enter. Double-click the name and...

I am having the exact same problem and I suspect it is when I have installed some new programs, not sure if it is from MS Update.
But it is very annoying.
What is auto hide if it does not auto hide! And it is Vista which is giving me this one! I found a way to fix this but it is definitely not elegant way of fixing an issue:

I just uninstalled URGE and rebooted. I haven't gotten the error yet, and it's been a few minutes. I'll let it go a couple of days to see if this solves it.

I'm in your same situation. Didn't the same happen with the Luna interface in XP? Unless Microsoft releases some kind of theme the way they did with Zune, it won't be possible. Of course, one could use third-party skinning programs, but those needlessly take up memory.

This is a very weak response. The pathname feature is extremely useful, particularly for anyone with 1000's of photos, and needs to be re-intstated!

I hate this as well. It is a make/break issue for us, along with the lack of being able to drag files into the command prompt. Why does MS modify core functionality and not give you the ability to turn it back on? I have searched high and low for a fix for this to no avail.

I confirm that I am having the same issue. However, Vista was preloaded on my computer and I have no Vista boot CD / DVD so cannot use your workaround.

Finally! this is the only page on google that actually has the right problem! ok exactly as you described, you're just working away at anything, sometimes nothing and the next click doesnt work! and you realise that its frozen itself again. you can keep clicking all over the place but nothing works, so you press alt-control-delete then click cancel twice and then everythings ok! and you can ...

I'm having a similar problem. I can set the image as the background manually, but I'm unable to see any .png files using the "Personalization > Desktop Background" method. When I click browse, png files simply don't show up as available items to chose.

Hey!!!
I have the same issue. On startup every time, there is no desktop. However, dsm.exe and explorer are both running. I have an explorer window loaded with "Documents" folder opened, only. My workaround is to just type in explorer.exe in the nav bar and it starts up the desktop and it goes on its merry way.
