Thanks, Dan. You've been a big help. In reading the FAQs about the Product Key Updater utility, it says that the utility scans all of the key Windows files to ensure they are legit and to help you determine if you need a clean install. It sounds like you are saying this is not a foolproof scan. After updating my Win XP SP2 to SP3, the automatic updates stopped working refering error to windows installer. the version of windows installer found in my system32 folder is 3.0.3790.2180 which does not appear to be part of the 2 versions in the microsoft support list. Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum. This will allow us to see what you are currently experiencing as well as formulate a resolution.

Sorry, but Microsoft cannot replace a product key if your's is lost or missing. They can only replace installation media.
