I assume that the desktop PC is configured as the Hub PC and that you are usig Centralized backup. I suspect that you have not yet configured the permissions for the drive. The following is from Help: Set user permissions for a centralized backup device Before you can use an external hard disk or network share as a central backup device for all computers in your OneCare circle, you must make sure that all users on the network have...

My question is whether or not before backing up my computer files I can see how many GB's it will take to do this? I would like to purchase a memory stick and need to know how big it needs to be.

Thanks a bunch for your input and I can see now this clean-up process does seem to be a joke on us Using onecare. and after reading these links from JimR1 I don't know how soon I can try to do this but I know I have a bunch of files getting backed up that don't need to be. That's why i wanted to clean out the back-up. I have ADD and it will take my head a little bit to get this all figured out and get brave enough to go through...

Thanks Jim, I've tried using the One Care on the XP computer to do exactly what you recommended, but for some reason even when I select "files from another computer as the backup file source" it doesn't see any other files except those backed up from the XP computer (I have verified that there are backed up files from my crashed Vista computer on the external drive). I'll try contacting...

Microsoft Live OneCare backup

I have OneCare installed on two desktop XPs and a laptop with Vista. I am attrempting to back up to a Seagate Free Agent 1TB drive which is attached to my desktop. It has failed consistently to back up any of the computers. On the drive I find that it has created catalogs for all three but they are all empty. What am I doing wrong?

The One Care backups do not need to go to the recycle bin, you can just delete them. See this post on how to delete One Care backups - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareba ckupandrestore/thread/f0281206-ed0b-474c-8541-cc50 843e5be2

I'm not sure of why you are seeing the unsupported operating system error message but there are a few things you can try. You can install the tool on the XP computer, restore the files to a folder on the external drive, then copy and paste them to the Windows 7 computer. Another option is to use One Care on the XP computer, perform a custom restore to a folder on the external drive, then copy ...

Not a very verbose question so I guess I have to assume what you are asking. To restore OneCare backups after you move to Windows 7, you can install the Restore Tool: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareba ckupandrestore/thread/e5d686c8-762b-4b22-bc08-bfb9 3f911e57

You can restore files by type or selected files, but you can't specify the folder and its contents for restore. Unfortunately, that is indeed a limitation of the OneCare backup/restore. What you can do is restore all missing files. It may restore some data you don't want, but it may be easier to remove that after the fact than to manually select hundreds of files to restore. -steve
