The EULA for an OEM version of XP states that the license is tied to the first computer on which it is installed. Replacing the motherboard with a different model board is like replacing the computer so technically the license died with the first motherboard. That said, if this is a generic OEM XP install disc..... it will work. If it is a branded OEM install disc (Dell, HP, eMachines, etc.) it probably will not work with the new motherboard...

Hi big340, Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows XP Community. The error message you received is associated with a known virus. You may run a System Restore or used your Antivirus software to scan your system. Both processes can be done in Safe Mode . Please let us know if this helped.

Hello nfg195 You do not reinstall XP from the desktop. Do you have an XP installation CD or recovery CDs? If you have recovery CDs look at your documentation for how to run them. If you have an XP installation CD follow the instructions in these tutorials http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_pro_install_-_graphic.htm http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

bugger different problem then. are you able to get into safe mode with a command prompt by starting up and rapidly tapping F8 key? if so try using the sfc and chkdsk tools: in a command prompt type: sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r hopefully windows can repair itself if you can't get into safe mode try pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL all together and hopefully it brings up Task manager, from there you can do a File Run New Task and type in explorer or...

That name looks like a remnant of a virus or spyware infection that has been removed. Run scans with your antivirus and antispyware programs. For more detailed help, go to the malware removal forum at Aumha , or see the spyware and malware removal guides at BleepingComputer.com .

I remember getting "blue screens". Wait, is your blue screen says something about dumping memory at the bottom of hte screen? That happens when your computer runs into a "coalition". For example, you suddenly plug in 4 usbs onto your computer, along with 4 others using a usb hub. Your computer can only run a maximum of things and from the electricty from the wall outlet to run those. When it goes beyond, it...

elusivescarlet, Well in this situation the only thing to really do is get a floppy drive. One thing is, the floppy drive prices are pretty cheap these days.

The message verbatim is: "You have exceeded your profile storage space by 796,761kB. You have to move files from yoiur profile to network or local storage." I would like to fix this so that I do not have to end the process tree for proquota.exe in order to logoff. This problem is debris remaining from a major meltdown due to a virus which I removed by paying McAfee's virus removal service ...

Quick add on - I have now seen the sticky thread at the top of this forum. I am going to follow the 4 steps mentioned in that thread and see if I have success. However, if anybody has any specific knowledge of this problem, I would be grateful. I shall also post back if the four suggestions also fail.

Backup technology has come a long way since Windows XP was released in 2001. Your external hard drive might have come with a built-in backup program. If not, there are many free and shareware backup programs available, such as Comodo Backup , Second Copy , Microsoft SyncToy , Karen's Replicator , and Rebit . And consider an online backup service, like SugarSync , IDrive , ...

Hi, Most Laptops have a hot-key comination on the keyboard to switch between the built in and external display. Do you get a display on the external screen when you do this? If you do there may be a fault with the onboard display. Try removing the external screen & loading Windows XP in VGA Mode, by pressing F8 as the PC boots. Select VGA mode from the menu with the arrow keys and press enter....

Hi Ken, Try running a chkdsk /r instead to perform a deep scan on the drives. If the AV protection is the same on all affected PCs, then its possibly related. Try disabling the protection and then running your disk checks, and see if the problem does not then reoccur. Use another scanner to check your PC is completely clean- http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/ Lastly establish the physical ...

XP-Home SP3. Logitech MX5000 Mouse/Keyboard (Installed end of 2007). Never have had any problems with either until a month or so ago. Hi, I don't know if you have lots of addons in IE8, or if your PC is pest free so try all of the below in order to cleanup (where you haven't already tried) and establish if the problem continues before moving on to the next; 1. Delete all your temporary internet files- Go to Tools-> Internet Options . Under Browsing History , Click Delete . In the next window Tick all boxes and click ...

That is not a problem, but you need to include the certificate of authenticity with the motherboard for it to be valid. The COA is the sticker on the side of the PC that has the Windows product key. These are also designed to not be removed without damage, so you will essentially need to sell the motherboard with the case. FWIW, I don't know where this talk of the motherboard goes with the ...

I'm using Windows XP Professional and am trying to create a system recovery disk using the Backup and Recovery Wizard. I'm backing up all the info on my laptop to an external device. The Wizard says at the outset that at the end of the process I will be asked to insert a cd to create a system recovery disk. In fact it never asks me to insert a cd. It just says (after the backuo is complete...

You damaged the Windows installation. If you haven't backed up data on that hard drive, you can possibly retrieve it by using a Linux Live CD such as Knoppix and copying the data to an external hard drive. Here is general information on using Knoppix for this: You will need a computer with two cd drives, one of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to hold your data ...
