One last shot here, then I recommend you hire someone for the job. Pull the cover off the Glow Plug relay. Follow the wires from the glow plugs to find it. The wires all go into a plug. Remove it from the relay. There will be 5 pins. One for each wire going to each of the glow plugs at each cylinder. Measure the resistance from the pin to ground. They should be in the neiborhood of 1 ohm each. See, no need to buy any wrenches or remove any...

I have never checked the resistance of anything except my Jack Russell's willingness to obey. I have found an online tutorial on the entire process which included several potential pitfalls with catastrophic results. In this guide, the hard fuel lines were removed in order to increase access. The guide also cited a crowfoot socket as one of the tools used; is this tool absolutely necessary? Should I put one of these on my shopping list...

Glow plugs are not like spark plugs that require periodic replacement. Glow plugs are good as long as they are good. Measure the resistance of each plug to ground. They should be in the neiborhood of 1 ohm. If significantly more or infinity, they should be replaced. Before proceeding, you would do well to download and read the Glow Plug brochure from BERU, one of the leading glow plug ...

Pressure coming out of the IP and going to the injector when tested on a test fitting will be about 500 PSI. That should be enough to remove a finger. Pressure coming out of the fuel pump is about 12 PSI, depending on engine RPM.
You don't give any indication as to why you want to change the pump. Repair parts and an overhaul kit are available for your fuel pump if all you want to do is ...

BTW, his estimate is $1800.00 to perform the work. Does this seem reasonable?

Although you do appear to be correct that the braking is much more even than in older models I have owned, when I have had the pads changed they have shown close to even wear front/back... (Although this is just an observation, couldn't say...

I always used to put in 6 quarts when changing oil on my '82 300SD (worried about causing leaks, I never drained the cooler). I always did it myself because, otherwise, too much oil was always put in. I assume some dirty oil was undrainable because the new oil never stayed clean very long (I consequently changed oil more frequently than the requirement). I think it's a good that you're doing ...

Received an email earlier this month on the change. Ordered a new thermostat for the SD, slow to warm up & sway bar bushings for my GF's Corolla. Trying to get rid of a clunk in the front end. Can track the bushings but not the Tstat, may be some bugs here and there.

Chuck,
Recommend you replace them all with new. Once they age to the point that they start to leak, I don't think you'll have too much success with trimming the old and putting them back on. If your new hoses are too short, then it's probably time to go to the dealer or an online parts house and get genuine new hose in a one meter length. You then cut the hose into the appropriate lengths...

check all balljoints in the system and all tie rod ends.
then , if everything checks out, your steering box is at fault.

Seems more like a random failure. Not that I endorse aftermarket parts, but seriously: the cost of the steel is trivial, I can't imagine they'd skimp.
