With veg oil it's about the distance you drive in one sitting. Making short trips and driving around town you don't get to use veg oil much. The car doesn't get warm enough to switch over much. Where as in my wife's situation she drives 50mi one way for work so the car gets nice a warm and she can run veg oil for 40-45 miles of her trip. I drive 15mi one way for work, so I wouldn't get as much use out of the veg oil....

I realize this is turning into a conversation rather than postings, but having just finished the article on fuels, I'm intrigued. Is there a reason why you use your home-brewed veggie oil in the 240D, and pay the high price of commercial biodiesel for the 300TD? gary

Move to Europe. The fuel's better there. Or use biodiesel. It's not a magic elixer, but happens to have better cetane performance than our rotten North-American diesel. The wikipedia entries on "cetane number" and "cetane index" will help. Basically, "high octane" fuel (gasoline, methanol, etc) will wait for the spark, no matter how hard/hot you squish it. At the opposite end, a...

Raising Cetane Rating ????
Published (2009-12-23 10:59:00)
Having read several topics on the 350 SDL Engine issues, which MB says seems to be a USA issue due to Cetane rating of fuel : Is there a method , additive, or ? that will raise the Cetane rating to the fuel used in Europe ? I have read that just a "higher " Cetane rating does not equate to a better fuel, which is somewhat confusing. Trying to avoid the detonation problem that has been mentioned as causing the head gasket/rod...

Bill, Welcome! I don't know the answers to your questions, I don't use anything other than pump fuel, but be patient because there are some knowledgable folks here (Dropnosky is one) who can probably help you out. If you have other questions not related to the fuel you are using, the Marshall Booth Diesel area and the W123 area get lots of traffic and your questions will get faster ...

I can't help much, but: The "Cigar Return Hose" is the one with the bump in it, about the size of a cigar. In the photo on their web site it looks like the other two cloth-covered 1/2" hoses, except it has a section about 6" long that's 3/4" outside. If your car has original hoses, the cigar hose will be obvious. Also, the "primary fuel filter" seems to be the little "lawnmower ...
