Which arts use them, or other such angular
staffs? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that they were used to break other staffs; is there any truth to this?

So my wife just gave me a really nice shirasaya
katana made out of carbon steel. It was a very nice gift yet the blade isn't that sharp at all. Compared to my katana I've had for a few years it's actually kind of dull. I ask, because there's an archery and fencing introductary course starting in january at the college i go to and I'm planning to sign up for it. I don't really know much about fencing though, so can anyone give me a bit of an overview of what it's actually like and what kind of things a typical class might involve?
