Hey guys, just a style to discuss and a couple of questions. Was searching through the internet and found this: http://okinawakarate.com/enmapsite/sindoryu/school .html Apparently it's one of the last "true okinawa-te" styles. When they spar, no protective gear, and the only rule is no eye gouging (yes, groin strikes and throat strikes are probably allowed). To make things even ...

Hi everyone i'm having trouble choosing a karate system and I wanted to get the opinions of people on this forum. Forgive me i'm not trying at all to start a style vs style thread as I believe any system is good in its own right. The styles by me are kyokushinkai, American Kenpo, Shuri-Ryu, Ed Parker Kenpo, and Kobayashi Shorin-Ryu. This is completely based on style, I already understand it's ...

Hello All. This is the first time I have ever threaded any thing in my life and I am sure it will show. I have been a martial artist for pretty much my entire life. I have worked extremely hard to get the ranks I have. Only to find that while I on ebay looking for karate flicks, what should pop up Rank Certificates for sale. Unreal!! I am completely discussed to know all ...

I practice Shotokan Karate and i am now 4 kyu. I am currently using a local made gi. However, i would like to buy a better quality, not-too-expensive gi. I saw Ronin gi on the internet. However, i do not know if this brand is ok and how do i decide on medium weight/heavy weight gi? The gi is strictly for daily training and not for tournaments, etc. So what i need is a rugged, durable gi...

After 4 years in shotokan and 5.5 years in shitoryu I have finally got my 1st Dan. It has been a great journey so far and am looking forward to the new opportunities this will open in my training. As far the grading goes, it wasn't my strongest and I am quite suprised I got through. I felt weaker and slower then usual, but went through without making any serious mistakes (I am pretty sure ...

Anybody ever heard of Sensei Bret Gordon? He is causing quite a "discussion" on another martial arts forum, I figured I would come over here and see if anybody had any more information, for better or worse. http://www.triomartialarts.com/ Remember the other popular thread, "instant black belt - just add ebay"? I think the biggest complaint about this guy isn't the fact that he's ...

So I've known the kata Kanku Sho for a couple of years now and have never put much thought into the bunkai of it (I'm just starting to investigate Jion). Then, on Thursday, I was asked about a particular section of the kata and it got me baffled. I tend to be able to suss bunkai easily but this bit is fairly confusing. The section in question is at 0:22-0:24 and 0:30-0:32 in the classic ...
