Hi Bruce, If I am reading your response right then I agree with you 100%. Hapkido can mean many different things to many different people. It is also so hard for your average Joe to distinguish between what would seem to be authentic Hapkido and what may be a hybrid or bastardised version. More to the point, most people who are studying one of these variations probably believe it to be authentic Hapkido as when you trust someone like your...

Nottaproblem.... here try this..... http://moosulkwan.com/T/00/00Main.asp The various links will take you to enough places where you can put together an idea of what is in your area and where it came from. The original practitioner I had in mind was Jeff Forby but I am not sure whether he is still teaching or not. Its been a while. Best Wishes, Bruce

Thanks Ray, Yep I came to International hapkido as a 1st Dan Shotokan & started from scratch, it's been 4 years now, that may seem long to some, but my 2 colleagues & I are on a coaching development course which means we have to get the techniques right for ourselves & also technically correct to pass on as a coach, it has to be as it came from the source... Grand Master Adams. It takes time but we know it is...

If I am not incorrect, Myong Jae Nam's own style of Hankido is a hybrid of Aikido and the Hapkido of Ji Han Jae. Is this so?

I think Sinmoo HKD (for sure) or Traditional Ji Han Jae lineage is authentic HKD (if kept true to his system). The reason I say that is all the people Bruce mentioned two posts ago were Ji's students, and I've been told by GM Ji himself over 90% of all HKD comes from him. Studying with GM Ji I see nothing in his teaching that encourages people to go off and start their own system. With that said I also don't see him as...

Fact is Cameron, that you are way ahead of the game whether you know it or not. The most important thing I have found in the Hapkido arts is identifying a school and teacher whose priorities are in harmony with your own. As a Hapkido teacher I can tell you that I spend quite a bit of my time correcting people's pre-conceived notions about what Hapkido is or what they believe it to be. If you have a place where you can go to and actually...

Hi All-- I was amazed, after getting back from a trip to Wales last week, when my teacher asked me if I would be ready to test for a yellow belt this coming Sunday, 8/31. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind (nobody makes a big deal out of belts at our dojang). I thought I had a long way to go. But we decided I'd work hard to get ready and see how it works out. My weakest weakness is ...

Hi everybody, my younger HKD brother, Ko Sehwan, has started a new project on youtube. His plan is to explain a basic technique every two weeks. His English is limited, so everything happens in Korean. Still it might be interested to watch. Last night we uploaded the first video, in which he talks about the forward roll. http://www.youtube.com/sangmumunju

All Is Hapkido a complete style and why do you not see any practitioners in UFC/Cage Figher events? Also is there any teachers in the Manchester UK area? My reason to ask is that there are a lot of MA's who cross train in other styles to complete the circle but I have never met an Hapkido'ist who trains in another style what are you thoughts?

My instructor Master Robert Gray accompanied GM Pellegrini (ICHF - Combat Hapkido) to do some combatives training in Iraq for the 10th Mountain Division (and others). They did 7 seminars in 5 days and had a real blast. Last year they had a similar tour in Afghanistan. I know how hard GM Pellegrini, Master Gray, CSM Redmore and many others have worked to come up with a great program for the ...

Hi, guys-- When i was looking over the past threads using the search button-- I came across a disturbing revelation that was recited and echoed by a few posters here as well as over at MartialTalk.com. Apparently, the general consenseus was that Hapkido initially is only effective against "attackers" only if they have no previous martial arts training or if they are unaware or arent paying ...

From what I've been able to determine, Hapkido looks pretty cool. I like the idea of a TMA that combines both striking and grappling. There seems to be a confusion of information, though, and I'm not sure what the problem is. Let me give you some examples. . . 1) I've had people describe Hapkido as: TKD - flashy kicks + throws and jointlocks. But then other people bitterly ...

i'm currently doing kickboxing, and was hoping to find a secondary martial art to help round myself out a bit, something including joint locks / throws / grappling. The nearest place to me (by a fair bit) which teaches this area is a Hapkido dojang, i just wanted to ask a couple questions since i know very little about the art. 1: What is it like? I mean does it have a primary focus on ...
