Sorry Paul reread your post, and your training does fit in with the what I was thinking. Somehow I missed the bit where it said that happens at grading. I agree the techniques need to be pressure tested, and gradings are a good place to do that. Would have edited my other post, but my feelings still stand if that is the way training is carried out week in week out.

First, we have to develop a understanding in our dojo there are three types of fighting and the training is different between them. One: Dojo fighting - "Technique first", gives us a chance to work on our techniques in a non competitive atmosphere with complete control. You have a chance to experiment with one another in a more relaxed way. Two: Tournament fighting - "Spirit and technique are equally...

I don't train at a Karate gym, but I'll put my 2 cents in. We train at a variety of ranges, and at a variety of speeds. We do the Jiu Jutsu on the ground or from standing from slow rolling (10%) up to a good training speed (70%). We do boxing sparring that usually escalates. We'll usually start at about 30% and end at about 70%. We don't do much kickboxing. In my MMA class we'll do multi range sparring so it'll be...

Kyokushin Kumite
Published (2008-11-15 08:10:00)
Having come in from another style of karate I'm finding it quite an adjustment to adapt to Kyokushin. Without head shots it's much harder to create gaps and while I can get through easily with mae geris the style seems to attract the tall and beefy - so I'm frequently dwarfed and much of my higher kicking is redundant. Just trading mid area punches and mawashi geri gedans is not really working for me. Any suggestions for...

Knuckle Callouses
Published (2008-11-15 04:48:00)
Knuckle push ups are good. But make sure you keep your wrists completely straight or else you could end up with wrist problems. What you could also do is tack up some layers of carboard or a strip of carpeting on a wall or post, put on some boxing hand wraps, and hit that moderately, eventually building up your striking force until you can hit it as hard as you can without it hurting. But like I said, be careful with this stuff because you...

Knuckle Callouses
Published (2008-11-14 22:10:00)
Hit people in the face. Hard. No, don't do that. I'd go for the knuckle push ups option, but that's cos I'm a shotokan guy - that's what we do. Hitting a bag is good for conditioning, but to get callouses (however you want to do it) takes a long time, and they're actually quite alot of maintenance. You usually have to do a fair bit to keep them.

first of all our classes are somewhat divided. Children classes, general classes, advanced classes. Then we have special seminars throughout the year for bunkia, kumite, kata and self defense. Generally classes would begin by kneeling in a seiza position then a short meditation period. We bow to the front of class then to sensei and sempai. Then we would do our stretching and warm-up routine....
