What should go in a grading?
Published (2008-12-03 09:31:00)
it depends on your syllabus. Its not so easy to define a 1st degree/Black belt without knowing a syllabus. some have forms, so a display of all the forms they know would be included. self defense? maybe. I am not a fan of these scenarios as it is difficult to create such an environment. sparring - 1 on 1, 2 on 1, 3 on 1. I think the point of doing multiple opponent sparring is not to see if you win, but to see how you handle yourself (without...

Hey Mr. Punch, you often speak right to the point, but some of the comments made by Spinmaster were in response to posts I made earlier. For instance, the reference to "old school Jujutsu" was first made by me. I was meaning, jujutsu as how it was believed to have been practiced around a hundred years ago. The Aikijutsu appearing more linear than Aikido was also in reference to one of my comments. My comments were more on the...

Mr. Punch, your points are appreciated. As I said to the others, I'm going to do some research before I respond to any of them. Just a note to everyone here: I may be argumentative at times, but that's just because once I've done some research into something I form strong opinions on it, because I'm used to thinking for myself and using common sense rather than just swallowing what someone tells me, not because I consider...

Silat, about seventeen years with my current teacher. I've done a lot of other things and might pick one of them up again, but I'm happy where I am.

Do you get bored and stale with your favourite MA at times? If so, what do you do to overcome it?

Imagine you're putting together the requirements for a grading at something around 1st Dan Level. Not everyone who trains is going to be 20 and male. What do you include in the grading? Will you include a fitness section outside the normal sparring etc requirements, or is that stuff irrelevant? Is there a power test, breaking boards, bricks, whatever? Will you include a ...

How come when someone asks "which MA is good for self defence" you hardly ever see Aikijujitsu listed? Krav Maga, Silat, Systema, FMA, etc. are all mentioned quite often, but my aikido coach was showing me some Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu today and it's quite brutal and to the point. It uses techniques like limb destructions, eye gouges, etc. not to mention that it has very effective combat ...

Pankration - a martial arts style used by the spartans back in Greece somewhat like MMA, while studying it I was so inspired and even more intrested. I've seen something on the history channel about it where they looked deeply into the techniques, but I still want to know more. This isnt a very big art, but I would like to know so much more about it. Has anyone here ever come across a School that...

Resshūken (裂蹴拳) In recent years I've come to hear of a Japanese martial art that is elegant and said to specialize in kicking and using one arm to block attacks, as well as adaptability, it's known as Resshūken (裂蹴拳). I've looked around for more information on it and couldn't find any. I'm wondering whether this martial art is just highly esoteric or if its just fictional. ...

Hey, I am looking for an effective street self defense martial art that will also provide conditioning in addition to techniques. My budget limit is $150 per month and figured that could set me up... Could anyone recommend a good Krav Maga or Systema school in midtown Manhattan that has classes during the week around 6? (I get out of work at 5:30pm) Thank you in advance,

What do you train in and how long have you been training in it? Do you feel that is enough or do you want to train in more styles??

Has anybody since starting their MA got into more fights? The only reason i ask this because, there have been a few times where i have had an altercation with someone, they usually throw the first punch and i have stood there taken the punch and then walked away (usually laughing). Now i have started MA's i think i am much more likely to fight back.

Anyone watch " last man standing" last night? If not...why not? It's a quality series (although Joey is a whiny bitch). Anyway...they competed in the Filipino art of Sikaran. It's an art I've heard of before but never really seen in action. First impressions are that it's a sort of Filipino-ised version of TKD or Karate? Same sorts of rising blocks, middle blocks, hip chamber (hikite) and...

more and more these days I'm hearing "I'm a cage fighter" or ".... is a cage fighter" this seems to be coming a more common term for people who participate in MMA. The concept of people fighting in a "Cage" seems to be the new hip with the kids image. It's a 8 sided (in most cases) fence. Wouldn't it need the top covered for it to be a cage? Never have I heard people use the term "...

I watched a replay of the U.S. Open in Orlando Florida last night on ESPN2. It's been a couple years since I had been to a NASKA tournament but I was both amazed and disapointed in the performances of the empty hand forms and the weapon forms. I was amazed at the ability of the martial artist to be able to do the "tricks" that they did while still spinning and twirling thier weapons (swords, bo...
