Remember its starts standing, Assuming that its a gi comp, 1) Establish grips early, 2) Stick with your gameplan, 3) Only try funky throws if your sure they will work, 4) Close guard all the way, but if there about to open it, beat them to it and sweep/standup 5) Make them play your strengths, not the other way round, 6) Always position before submission 7) Fight hard, but be sportsmanlike 8) Remember its just a learning experience 9) Have fun!

Make your own patches?
Published (2009-11-07 05:04:00)
Hi everyone, After searching for a long long time I eventually found myself a BJJ gi that comes without patches and has very little embroidery. Instead they come with a ‘patch kit’ which I thought was a bit funny. But it did get me thinking, I don’t particularly like any of the advertising style patches I have seen, but I wouldn’t mind wearing a patch of my own design just for a bit of fun for a competition and maybe April fool’s day and...

Don't spend the previous day in the garden and get sunburn on your shoulder so that the next day, when someone grabs your gi, it feels like sand-paper being dragged across your back. You can guess how I know this. Seriously though...don't put to much into it. The first comp is always nerve wracking and a major learning experience. No matter what the result don't beat yourself up about it. Just doing it is a result in itself....

Not used it. Just rolled with regular box and supporter. Skad cheaper by the way. I don't get what all the padding is for on those shorts. Since when did you need to pad your IT band or thigh for BJJ?! Weird. Someone enlighten please.

You have an added problem in MMA that many of the guys train in more than one place. Easy to catch and spread infections.

I believe Renzo Gracie teaches in NY. I don't know his prices, but he is an awesome instructor. If you're within driving distance, you should definitely check his school out.

I think it really depends on the individual...different people have different things work well for them. I'm still a pretty big BJJ n00b, but I also love the bump sweep/kimura from bump sweep....since I'm pretty tall I find it works well for me almost every time I try it. The pendulum sweep works quite well for me in guard as well, but only if my opponent is lazy enough to give up a leg. I can...
