tournament questions
Published (2009-12-20 04:39:00)
I am primarily a TaeKwonDo and Muay Thai guy. I work out with some Karate students somewhat regularly though. I was wanting to do more tournaments. What is the policy on TaeKwonDo practitioners going to Karate competitions? I don't want to be disrespectful of other martial arts by just showing up without knowing what is acceptable. I am so not the "hey look at me. I am a TKD guy and I am beating you up," kind of person....

You're thinking of open tournaments. Those are pretty much wide open and any style can attend and compete. Style and association specific tournaments are membership restricted. Obviously, you won't be permitted to attend, neither would you want to because the rules likely wouldn't match what you are used to.

Go to open tournaments. Anybody can compete in them... Just take the time to find out what the rules are -- and what they really mean.

I`d reccomend just about anything by a Brit named Iain Abernethy. You can find all his stuff at www.Amazon.com or www.Amazon.co.uk But if you`re in the States and you want his DVDs (excellent by the way), you should goto his website www.iainabernethy.com . Amazon only carries his DVDs in the UK format and they won`t play in alot of US DVD players. If you buy from his site he automatically sends you the right one for your country. Sorry about...

Anyone know this song?
Published (2009-12-22 16:31:00)
This song is very familiar to me. It is Karate Do Sanka and we sing it with my Sensei every time I go to Okinawa or he comes state site. My understanding is that the song was created by an Okinawan karate association. Not sure which one. I also have my students sing this song. It is great!!!

Any of Hirokazu Kanazawa's performances are fundamentally sound, and certainly a pleasure to watch.
He doesn't perform the kata with fluff, and everything you see is no-nonsense, practical performance.
If I recall correctly, most of the videos you see of him, those are from a time when he wasn't a young fellow, either, including the ones with the aerial techniques (Unsu, Kanku Sho, etc...

Dan pretty good work and thanks for showing me somebody still does the older forms beside me. When Chulgi for us was also known as the speed Kata because my GM required it to be done between 7-10 seconds with all the details. Bassai was and still is one of my favorite of all times, it is great to go back and claim what was once before we end up forgetten everything with the ripe old age clause.

Shorin Ryu is not "just like Goju" at all, really. They have completely different sets of kata, and move differently. Also, there are four major branches of shorin ryu, and several others which are branched off of those four. Each branch teaches some kata that the others don't, and have different own versions of the common ones. You'll have to find out which styles of shorin ryu your local ...

In both the systems I trained my Sifu always had a checklist of sorts. There was a scale on performance for each thing tested, be it a form, techniques, sparring, footwork, whatever the test consisted of at that level. You had to score above the minimum requirements. There was also a spot for notes on each one.
At my first school, we were either passed or failed and then shown our results. At ...

If Mr. Ohshima is still teaching, it'd be worth checking out purely by his reputation. If you have a copy of the Karate Kyohan like most karate-ka of the Shotokan tree do (or Chung Do Kwan taekwondoists too for that matter), you can see pictures of a youthful Ohshima demonstrating.
What are you trying to get out of the experience, Daniel? I would imagine you'd find good, solid kihon ...
