Quick Q (Time Machine)
Published (2009-11-26 16:08:00)
well If I were to just drag and drop the files since I do not have the installation disks, which would I need, and would the correct files make it bootable? I do not have enough room to clone a copy of my drive onto the disk and then use time machine, both drives are the same size and I have only 20GB of 80GB free on both. Is there another way?

I have a decent amount of experience buying & selling on Craig's List and eBay. You mentioned seeing Macs on Craig's List for $200 that were not as good as your Mac. Firstly remember these are "asking prices"...many times the folks selling these computers have absolutely no idea what their Mac is worth. Many times they remember what they paid for their Mac when it was new (years & years ago)...and...

As a quick solution you could use the install DVD to change the password. Not good that liquid however and further problems may follow:- manuals.info.apple.com/en/leopard_install-setup.pdf

I'm sorry, I don't know how I missed that. <facepalm> Yes, you can most definitely run the 64-bit kernel - if I'm not mistaken, Snow leopard will do it by default on Mac Pro models.

The 27" iMac is gorgeous! It's almost like having two monitors at your use. It seems big at first, but you get really used to it. I love being engulfed by the display and nothing else.

That's a shame that you're running 7ista on the newer iMac. If you were going to run it at all, I'd put it on the slower machine. :-\ 7ista can't even make full use of that hardware.

Go for the iMac - does not seem that anything you plan on doing is time critical down to the second, so go for one modern unit which will do most things and go for iWork, forget Office - iWork will do all that you outline and is Apple Native viz No drama.

Yes.
I also have a old apple crt monitor and a powermac g4 but sawtooth. You can plug in the CRT monitor when the computer is on. I've done it many times. But depending on your video card it could fry.
It's not recommended though unless you must. Because it can do damage to the computer, monitor and you.
Hope this helps!

So this is an iMac G5 Power PC and not a newer Intel iMac? I would almost be willing to bet the Hard Drive is dying. The fact Disk Utility from the OSX DVD would not find it proves it even more to me.
That can be changed. Do you know the specs on on the iMac G5 like CPU speed especially? Does it have an iSight camera or not?

It will be plenty for what you will do! If you are going to have 10+ things open on your desktop, then I would spring for a more powerful computer...but wise thing to do is save the dough!

My own motto is buy the best processor you can afford.
For myself, I would not be able to purchase any computer at this time with less than the core i7. If I can't afford it, then I live with the one I have until I can.
However:
For the uses you have listed, the 3.06 Core2Duo is more than capable.
You have mentioned nothing that would not function quite adequately with 2GB of RAM and see...

I think either machine would satisfy your needs as far as performance is concerned. You'd know better, but it seems to me that the larger monitor would be nice for CAD work. Do you use multiple windows at the same time? If so, the larger work area of the 27" would be an advantage.

As long as the iMac meets these requirements you should be fine. These requirements from the Adobe web site.
Mac OS
* PowerPC® G5 or multicore Intel® processor
* Mac OS X v10.4.11–10.5.4
* 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
* 1.6GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-...

That is normal for Mac Pro and G5 Dual Core machines. They are whisper quiet, especially if you have selected to run processors at Automatic setting under Energy Saver > Options. Put your hand down in front of the front leg and you should fell the gentlest of a breeze at the air intake.

Finding a replacement display for your iMac is not easy. Most of the popular places that supply Mac parts do so for portables with limited parts availability for the iMac.
I did find one place that looks promising. Here's the LINK . I'm not sure they will have a replacement display for your machine. However, it's my understanding that the replacement displays offered by Apple are an ...

I've never heard of a hard drive being so full that OS X wouldn't start up. Just how full is your hard drive?
If you don't have a bootable backup on an external drive, the best way to access your hard drive is by using another Mac and boot your machine by using " Target Disk Mode ". You can delete files off your hard drive by using that method. Removing the hard drive from an iMac is not ...

try removing & reseating all your ram, this can often cure or help simple things like a slightly poor connection.
also if you can remember which slots came up as empty you could maybe move that ram into different slots, that way if it happens again you can see if its the fault has moved with the ram meaning the ram has failed or if it stays with the slots then they are causing the problem.

You can backup to an internal drive with Time Machine. It does not allow you to back up to the boot drive if I remember correctly since a failure of that drive would likely take out the backup as well.

I use a WD, Seagate, Iomega Mad Dog, CompUSA (Stinks) and another external with all my Macs. Never an issue with any of them. One is a 1TB. A friend has a Seagate 1TB. He likes it. I tried it on my iBook G4 and it came right up.
Is this drive just to be used on the Mac with OSX? If so be sure to open Disk Utility and format it in a Mac format.
What Mac model do you own? You said G4?...
