If you have no backup and your data are priceless you should find professional help ASAP. Do not run the disk.

Another data point is how many ppl hang around the iMac and MP forums here @ Macrumors. On average, I'd say the ratio is 2-3 (in favor if the iMac, ofc). If we assume that both types of users are equally likely to seek advice/share experiences on a popular site like Macrumors, I'd say gugucom's estimate is on a low side. Then again, majority of the iMac users are probably ppl who have never heard of Macrumors, whereas MP crowd...

I wouldn't say the test is a joke... but like most early CPU engineering sample reviews, results are (of course) not fully representative of the final product, however it's interesting to see early benchmarks to get a feel for what workloads might benefit the most from these new CPU's so buyers on the fence about buying a 2009 Mac Pro vs. waiting for the 2010 Gulftown version can make a somewhat informed decision. BTW,...

1) Fast is relative. The last MacPro update are the early 2009 Nehalems, with the Octo 2.93 having the fastest processor. You can easily Google "MacPro 2009 benchmarks" and find comparative information.
2) As for your other question FAST = 1/CHEAP

No, you cannot upgrade it. It won't make that much of a difference, because running a 64-but kernel is pointless if you don't have all 64-bit hardware.

RAM will allow you to run more applications at the same time, assuming they aren't taxing your CPU.
Open Activity monitor and find out if your RAM or CPU is topped out when it starts bogging down. If not, then it's the hard drive, though not likely.

Tell them you have sensitive business data on the drive and refuse to send it back to them. See what they'll offer.

about time a company comes up with a 3.5" one. Why were they all following the "were only manufacturing only 2.5" trend.

A minute by minute backup?
Or would you rather have a bootable backup?
In that case, Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper would be a better choice for backup.
Regardless if you have a RAID 0 or not.
I personally have never been a fan of RAID 0. 2 drives = 2x the rate of failure.
What are you doing that makes you really want a RAID 0?

the 2600 is a bit old now. at least 3 years. i would consider upgrading it to another GT120.

Yep, my dual 2.0 G5 (jun '04) just went belly-up in the exact same fashion. Tech said it'll cost $600 for him to fix it. I can buy another computer for less than that!
This puts me in the unfortunate position of someone who needs a new computer 12 weeks before Macworld...
I've been tossing the idea back and forth of buying a G5 on ebay and waiting it out, or jumping in for a Mac ...
