Depends on the physical resolution of the clips. Also consider that .avi, .mov and .mpg are only file formats, meaning they are a container for video and audio encoded with different codecs like Xvid, H264, ProRes, MPEG-2, .... I would go with .mov encoded with the Apple DV codec, or with .dv, which is obviously the DV codec. Also know that using the DV codec will take 3.125MB/s to store the video, but it will be better for editing as highly...

The compatibility list is those cameras Apple has tried. It does not necessarily exclude yours. I do recommend though that you have your iMovie and QuickTime updated to the most recent updates. If you have tried the camera and it doesn't work, then perhaps something like MPEG Streamclip can convert the files for you. Another tools is ffmpegX.

Unless you are willing to go with tape, I would definitely go with a flash camera. I had the HG21 HDD camcorder, and would much rather deal with flash cards. Now I am using a JVC HM-100 camcorder with flash cards and footage wrapped in .mov.
Look into the Canon HF-S100, it has been highly regarded by the HV20/30/40 group. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-Me.../dp/B001OI2 YZQ

1. Up until w/in the last month we had a dozen G5s (a few first or second generation) editing HDV on almost a daily basis.
1a. No.
2. You could export from FCP or Compressor. I don't know if those will retain the data used for stop/start detection (which is separate from timecode). Also, if you have a fast enough Mac you can capture HDV into ProRes via FW on the fly. You ...

You probably need to convert the video file from the windows machine into a quicktime format for your mac. You can do this with mpeg streamclip which is a free download from the internet.

This is one of the most often posted question on this forum and it's not an easy one to answer, as the opinions on the matter are diverse and sometimes heated.
I'd approach this by first asking a few initial questions:
1) What's your budget? Don't forget accessories and other cost of ownership items that comprise the total cost.
2) SD or HD? HD's all the rage right now but that ...

Wide Angle Lens and Filters Help

Is there a reason why you insist using uncompressed?
It is goddam taxing on your stuff with very little benefit compared to,say, pro-res HQ ( 10 bit) even if you do a lot of compositing and heavy grading.
Requirements for the uncompressed (4:2:2) are around 1.300 Mb/s and for proresHQ 220 Mb/s. 6 times more.
Just my .02cents.

You'd need to change your specs to i7 quad. Forget about BR etc. accessories and spend money on processor. Otherwise forget about working with HD on your new mac. Seriously.
