Something like Amazon.com: Hardware Hacking Projects for Geeks (9780596003142): Scott Fullam: Books might be more appealing then? I don't think you'll really find anything as "general" as you've specified, and if you did, it's probably not going to be overly resourceful beyond what he can figure out on his own (by playing around).

They use your serial number on the machine to find warranty information, the receipt doesn't matter. Under the Trade Practises Act's implied warranty, it doesn't matter if your $3,000 notebook is 13 months old, they still have to fix it.

As long as you check the feedback first, you should be fine. Extended AppleCare is almost all profit-margin, so seeing it for half the recommedned retail price or less is not uncommon.

I don't know of any books specifically, but I like tech books published by O'Reilly , The Pragmatic Bookshelf & Peachpit .

Supported != works. I have Win 7 running in Bootcamp and Parallels right now - not that I've used it all that much yet. My main parallels environment is still XP and the Win7 one is there for testing purposes.
