Another thing you can do is Get Info on the drives and check Ignore Permissions. From what you're reporting on Repair Permissions, it sounds like you've been screwing around with permissions a lot.

Turtle, still, so the forums are not working anymore? Actually, after upgrading and upgrading... I've decided to stay put happy and stable with 10.4.1 for long time..... I burnt out on upgrading for so little benefits and huge headaches. Eventualy, of course I upgrade and get new computer... maybe 1-5 more years. Still, have you used Sharepoints. It was so effortless, but then files started saying read only, and no, just doesn't...

ScreenSaver - wallpaper hack
Published (2009-11-25 21:08:00)
Oh, my bad, I portrayed the wrong image. I KNOW what root can do to the rest of your computer (after seeing mum up her computer with it), I'm just saying that it enables the root user, whose username and password you can then use to authenticate whatever you cannot access (like changing the system preferences on YOUR account)

The $29 Upgrade DVD should install from scratch just fine. You can boot from it, use its DU to format the drive and then proceed to install a fresh copy of SL. Are you sure you need to wipe the MBP though? Although wipe installs are a very common procedure in the Windows world, with OS X they are rarely required. SL comes with a very smart update installer than can replace all the system components, check third-party extensions for...

It's jut an app. It didn't ask me for a password at all. I'm sure someone here can help you script a command that can run at login. I bet Automator would make it fairly trivial.

Time Machine uses the computer's MAC address to associate TM backups with particular Macs. Since your 15" MBP has a difference MAC address than your 17" MBP, TM believes they are different even though the actual boot drive is the same. Here is a tip on fixing that: 10.5: Repair Time Machine after logic board changes - Mac OS X Hints

You could just copy the user folder over manually using the Finder. All the folders are easily visible in Backups.backupdb/your computer name/Latest.

Do you own "Disc Warrior"? You should, anyway. With Disc Warrior you don't have to mess around with permissions (which never helps anyway). You put in the disc, and repair the folder trees etc., which really helps. It's just 100$, and worth it.

Always glad to hear from more Mac users in Israel. It sounds like an incompatibility between OS 9.2 in Classic and the software in question. It seems that virtually no one uses Classic anymore; it really is a dead end. The page for the software mentions that it works on 9.2 in Classic. It's too bad that the developer doesn't appear to have any plans to bring it to OS X.

If you’re going to use Migration Assistant and hook up the 2 computers via FireWire, it really shouldn’t matter that the OSes are different. And the PPC Apps thing should be a non-issue. Intel Macs run non-Universal PPC binaries through Rosetta. Of course, there may be specific apps that don’t work well with Intel or Snow Leopard, and you or he should do search the web a bit re: the ones that ...

If you have another HDD you can use Disk Utility > Restore to clone your drive to the other drive. Then do a fresh install and once the installer asks if you want to migrate form another Mac, say yes, attach the other drive, and select it. That should allow you to get back all your apps, media, documents, and settings.

This system hack makes your screensaver your wallpaper for the duration of terminal being open (press controll-c to cancel). It is COMPLETELY safe to use. I suggest using the Helios screensaver. To use, open Terminal and enter (or just copy-paste): Code: /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework /Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/Sc reenSaverEngine -...
