Welcome to our forums. OS X (pronounced "oh ess ten") is the operating system for Mac computers, much like Windows Vista or Windows XP is a PC operating system. Boot Camp is a dual boot system that Apple provides, allowing users to boot into Windows on their Mac computers. I'm going to move your thread to the most appropriate forum, our "Alternative Operating Systems" forum, where you can get far...

Wrong again... I get it now, The windows model is that you buy a computer configured a certain way and use if for its original purpose for the rest of its life, if it goes wrong you have to shore it up or get outside help. MSFT and the hardware manufacturers are in cahoots etc etc. All in all a really really crap consumer deal!

In OS X go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and choose your boot camp drive. Shut down your Mac and connect the external display. Power on your Mac but close the MBP's lid quickly after pressing its power button. Leave the lid closed until you need the keyboard to log in to Vista. This should force things to the external display. Once logged in you can use the control panel to try to turn on or set up your MBP display.

Thanks for the reply. I tried restarting the computer shortly after posting the message in windows mode and it recognized the display. It also works in extended mode, which i know some people were having trouble with. I downloaded a new driver from nvidia's website before restarting as well-maybe that helped.

If there are multiple partitions, it's not necessary to wipe the whole drive. Only the extra partitions need to be removed. After the data is backed up on the other partitions, Disk Utility can do live partitioning to restore the drive back to one partition. iDefrag or wiping the entire drive is only necessary when there already is one partition and Boot Camp can't create a second.

Sure, automated file and settings transfer has been built in to Windows for years. In 7 it's called Windows Easy Transfer.

OEM software is specific licensing to allow computer manufacturers to install Windows on their hardware. There are two important parts to OEM licensing - you aren't supposed to install an OEM copy of Windows on anything other than what that copy was installed on (obviously you can upgrade stuff, but a Dell OEM license isn't legally valid on an HP, etc.), and OEM licensing requires that the licensee support that copy of Windows....

I bought it for the upgrade price b/c I've owned version 2 for a while.
I'm on a MBP C2D 2.16, 3 GB RAM, but things don't seem any faster for me. Win2k, XP and Win7 seem the same or nearly so.
Also the Fusion GUI and VMs beachball a lot for minutes at a time, will respond to a click or two, then beachball for several more minutes. It will become responsive after maybe 10 minutes of ...

Try iDefrag first and see if Bootcamp lets you create your Windows partition. Generally the issue is related to fragmented free space on the drive, which Bootcamp can't handle. Or you could simply back up your OS X installation using Disk Utility (boot from your OS X installation disc and use DU that way), then use DU to format the drive over again (which is what the error message tells you ...

Yes you can, but you might have problems accessing files in the Users directory. Try setting the security settings so that "Everyone" has all access. If that doesn't work, you might try pulling the drive, putting it in an enclosure, and booting off it (via USB) from the laptop. Windows will probably bitch about how your hardware has changed significantly, but if you can get it to boot, you can ...
