Yes I'm certain it will work. MSI just must have not updated the CPU support list because they advertise the board as being 140W capable, which is the TDP of the 965. But if a Phenom II x4 955 works then I guarantee your 965 would work. In the extremely rare case it is not supported, the system will boot with an unknown CPU and you will need to manually set the
multiplier and voltage...

Sounds like you should replace the cooler. Look here for some idea of what to look for. I had one that I oiled a few times but it just continued to get worse anyway. You can't get just a fan for those little coolers, you need to replace the entire cooler. Be advised you need to remove the MB to undo the retaining pins for the cooler from the backside of MB.
