Just a regular serial cable? Like a Cisco Switch Console Cable (Cat5 to 9 pin)? I didnt know that, figured it was a jumper setting or something... If its a Cisco console cable, then no sweat, I have TONS of those...after the console cable issue is fixed, hyperterm in? or Putty? Thanks Fridge, now I need to try and research this! Good info.

Actually, I should be looking at the "Maximum amps for chassis wiring" right? http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm That's what was confusing me when I was looking at "Maximum amps for power transmission" Thanks Maheriano & Zogg for clearing things up guys.

I know the cable you're talking about, got the same one on my Ampie and it's not P4. The gauge of wire is directly related to the length of the wire. You could run a 20 foot 4 gauge wire and a 1 inch 18 gauge wire and they'd probably (just a guess for illustration purposes) run at the same resistance. So as long as the thinner wires aren't very long, you can likely just solder the 10 gauge right to them and be fine for...

NetBook + Battery = BOOM

Thanks for the reply Malcolm. I was rather suprised with the pop, I just thought that a 12v battery wouldn't power the 20v. I do understand that batteries provide the current and don't push it, but put it down to being a 12 amp hour rechargable battery, I take it this doens't make any difference. Ah well I won't be doing any more brick-pushing-into-holes again! I'm just glad I got it working again I think I'll...

M1-ATX powers an Epia something or other. Its been a long time since I dealt with this car computer but it is the smallest Epia. The current drain continues after the 45s. The current drain is measured as 6V across a 10ohm inline resistor. Unless I got my math wrong that is a 600ma drain. I know it takes my battery from full to 40% power overnight. There is one thing I just thought of. Yesterday I spent 4 hrs testing and looking for problems...

That light sequence is normal, it occurs after power (not ignition power) is applied to the unit. The unit won't "power on" and spin up the cooling fan until ignition power is applied. There are a couple of things that could be your issue. No ignition power, insufficient voltage or amperage to go to the "power on" state, the jumpers aren't set correctly, a firmware issue or possibly a bad unit....

Break out the multimeter and start measuring voltages on the 12v constant line and the 12v switched line.
Measure voltage on them with the key off, the key in ACC position and then when the engine is running.
And FYI - That is an M3, not an M2.

I want to make sure I got this right.
Say I have a regular ol' USB hub (non powered) that I ran from my trunk pc to my glove box..
Normally, in order to power it for "heavier" devices, I would have to plug in an AC adapter into an inverter and power the hub.
My question is...

What PICO do you have? What board are you trying to power? A 60W brick is good enough to power most boards

Psumoni works on my win7 system, had to install in compatibility mode. I I remember correctly I had to do something special to install the drivers. Also the Psumoni program will not tell the PC to shutdown unless it is the active window, so I have to shut down manually.

Great work, Fox! I assume when you say the M4 is connected to nothing, you mean absolutely nothing, not powered up with 12v, etc.?

i do it all the time. Take your 12v and acc wires from the m1 and connect them to a yellow line off the bench psu. Black goes to ground of course. Then you'll need to take the green wire from the bench psu and touch it to ground to turn the PSU on. You should then see the power led on your m1 light up and your ready to go.

You can't "shove" amps, you can only pull them.
From what you said, it seems that the netbook takes 20v? Don't plug a 12v battery into it, plain and simple. It is remotely possible, that due to the lower voltage, (Lower voltage at the same power == higher current) the netbook had to pull a higher current through its internal regulators, which overloaded something internally. That's all ...

The P4 cable doesn't supply power to the M2 ... it supplies power to the motherboard from the M2.
