Definetly sounds like an air lock of sorts, does the expansion tank seem to boil and bubble alot? This could well be the thermostat mate. (quite likely tbh as the coolant temprature is sampled from the thermostat housing wheras the fan switch is usually in the rad, therefore the water is probably not circulating).....

3.0 cams and a decent exhaust are the first sensible mods. Ligther flywheel will feel a bit livelier in 1st and 2nd, but doesnt actaully increase the BHP at all. There are lots of different ratios of diff for F23, so you would need to be more specific.

The XE's are common as muck over here mate, and therefore they are very cheap! The cheapest way of getting the most power from an XE is to run it on carbs of some kind. Bike carbs or webers will make substantial power over standard and wont break the bank. The next stage after that is cams. If setup well, on a good engine, i have heard that an XE with weber 45's, some nice cams, correct ...

Looking at the fact you done all the headwork such as skimming etc, its got to be the Head gasket as being the issue since once its pressed down by torqeing it down and then undoing it again and refitting using the same gasket again must have caused your problem, the problem should also reveal combustion pressures leaking through the HG so do a pressure test if you can and see if any pressure ...

I am not an engine designer but my understanding is that they run better the hotter they are, indeed, that is one of the reasons we have pressurised systems, as water under pressure boils at higher temperatures. The LET was certainly designed by GM to run at 92 degrees. If you run it at lower temperatures then you really ought to also remap the ECU otherwise it will be running slightly rich ...
