QUOTE (francois @ Dec 24 2009, 12:27 PM) If you leave IS on, sometimes you can see the image drifting in the viewfinder and then snapping back. I always turn IS off when I'm shooting on a tripod. On some lenses, IS is supposed to turn itself off when it detects that a tripod is used but I've seen that the "smart" detection is not always working as it should. It depends on the version of IS in the...

QUOTE (gwelland @ Dec 22 2009, 08:29 PM) I don't find it to be an either/or proposition. I use the Cube for landscape shooting with my D3x and still use an Arca B1G for nature work where I want a much faster ability to change the camera position. For landscape I really appreciate the precision of the Cube. As you said though, if you didn't like geared heads then the Cube may not be for you. It is a lot faster and...

QUOTE (kirktuck @ Dec 24 2009, 01:04 PM) I own both a Profoto 600b system (600 ws+ battery) and an Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed A/S (1100 watt second system with the capability of using two heads in an asymmetrical arrangement.). I love them both but the Elinchrom Ranger is the hands down winner in every category except weight. The battery seems go on forever and the UI is easy and straightforward. I've given up on...

Wasted many years with bad monitors

There are some canned profiles of the new dell that are very good. I used that as a baseline and then tweaked it with colorsync software. My dell screen (U2410) is an extremely close match to my epson 3800 and 7900 prints. The key is turning down the brightness; my studio setting -- during the day is generally not brighter than 30 units. I will upgrade at some point, but it's nice to have a decent mid to high range monitor that I can...

QUOTE (Joe Dragon Fine Art Photography @ Dec 22 2009, 04:30 PM) Brent, I am still looking around for a ball head to use both on my 35mm and LF Toyo. The 55 has come into my view among others but want to make sure that with the LF, I will be satisfied since my current head has the 3 handles and I am comfortable with this type but not my particular one for the newly purchased Toyo. What have you used the 55 with? Any comments...

QUOTE (Alexis Alvarez @ Dec 24 2009, 10:45 AM) For long exposures, it helps to turn the image stabilization off. It apparently causes "image shift." I'd read about this on the Internet, but can't find the original citation. If you leave IS on, sometimes you can see the image drifting in the viewfinder and then snapping back. I always turn IS off when I'm shooting on a tripod. On some lenses,...

QUOTE (Peter McLennan @ Dec 22 2009, 06:26 AM) Do these gear heads (Arca or Photoclam) have a freewheel function? The gear heads used on movie cameras (nearly identical design) can disengage the pan and tilt gears for rapid repositioning. They also have three speeds (gear ratios) for each axis. The gears cannot be disengaged on the Cube, they're always in effect. You may prefer the Bogen design, where the gears can be...

Tripod for Hiking
Published (2009-12-25 15:38:00)
Hi, I used to have a Velbon 630, it's about 1.4 kg "sans head", but it is quite large. I used to have Acratech Ultimate Ballhead but switched to the RRS BH 40 because they have "lever type" quick release. The issue with the Acratech was that I use to mix up the "pan" knob and the "QR" knob so I was releasing my lens by mistake. Never dropped it, fortunately. I still...

QUOTE (wolfnowl @ Dec 9 2009, 09:11 PM) Hi Folks: In Michael's recent review of the Hartblei cam he mentions the Arca Cube tripod head. I wandered over to B&H to have a look, and they have two listings for it with different prices: $ 1,699.99 and $ 1,924.95. The only difference I can see is the very nice leather carrying case, which, as Jack Flesher says in his review, "though ...

You want a very soft bokeh prime lens for those shots of the people getting ready and the closeups - so that they have that nice "wedding photo" dreamy look to them.

From what I've read, NEC's top monitors compete well with Eizo. My draw to Eizo is from their reputation, the reviews I've read, and importantly to me, the company's focus. They seem to be focused on producing monitors with high quality color rendering performance. Even to the extent of designing into the monitors a hardware calibration capability in order to achieve the best possible ...

QUOTE (alban @ Dec 24 2009, 09:42 AM) I am planing on purchasing a battery powered kit but I find it hard to decide on one. What I am looking for is a 1200 w/s 2 head system ,asymetrical, built in slaves, decent power and if possible compact. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated That kind of power on battery I assume you just need to find the head you want and get this or ...

For exposures under 50th second or so I find it really hard to completely eliminate all movement with that focal length, wind or no wind. So I put a heavy beanbag on top of the camera and lens. If anyone has a better solution I'd like to know as well.

I have both. The Mola Demi is more focused and has faster fall off, but it's a subtle difference. I also have the old Norman 22"(nearly identical to the PF), the Mola Euro and the 17" Bowens beauty dish.

Well, it seems to be a white balance problem. But why only at ISO1600 And here at University, I'm not able to reproduce the problem ! Very strange. So I will investigate futher. Have a Nice Day. Thierry
